The stock Photos app is perhaps the best way to view photos and videos on your iPhone or iPad, but there are certain features we all know we want that Apple just keeps forgetting to put into the app natively. Fortunately, that’s an area where having a jailbreak can be particularly useful.
PhotosPlus is a free jailbreak tweak by iOS developer nowesr1 that promises to be “an awesome tweak for the stock iOS Photos app,” and given what it can do, we can sort of agree with that notion.
This tweak allows users to configure certain aspects of the native Photos app, and we should specify that it only works with Apple’s Photos app, and not any third-party alternatives such as Google’s Photos app.
Right out of the box, PhotosPlus adds a dedicated preference pane to the Settings app where you can configure several options to your liking:
The things you can do here involve modifying the stock Photos app, and include the following:
- Loop video playback when viewing videos
- Un-mute videos when the preview plays
- Hide the Library tab
- Hide the For You tab
- Hide the Search tab
- Hide the Shared tab
While there’s obviously a lot of emphasis on hiding unwanted tabs from the Photos app, especially for someone who only cares about the Albums tab for the sake of seeing their Photo Library contents, we especially appreciate the other non-hiding options.
For one, I’ve always wanted for video playback in the Photos app to loop. That’s because sometimes after watching a video once, I wanted to verify what I just saw, or enjoy the video again. Rather than tapping play manually, I think this should be an automatic process, just like watching a YouTube Short in the YouTube app. Should I want to stop viewing that video, I can scroll past it.
If you think the PhotosPlus offers value for your Photos app needs, then you can download the tweak for free from the BigBoss repository via your favorite package manager app. The tweak supports jailbroken iOS 15 and 16 devices.
