It’s been a ridiculous week following WWDC 2024, chock-full of announcements about iOS & iPadOS 18. Even the jailbreak community has suddenly come alive, pushing updates to jailbreak tools and attempting to see whether palera1n can be used to jailbreak certain checkm8-vulnerable devices post-update to iPadOS 18 and tvOS 18.
And speaking of palera1n, existing users may want to be aware of an updated pre-release build that got pushed early Thursday morning in the form of version 2.0.0 beta 9.2. This new build was announced via the project’s Discord server, and from what we can gather, it’s a minor update:
The change log notes that palera1n version 2.0.0 beta 9.2 simply updates the embedded checkra1n to the newest version of 1337.2 in the CLI (command-line interface). The change log for that includes the following:
– Fix iBoot patches for iPadOS 17 beta
– Fix ATV4k breakout board support code causing high CPU usage
– PongoOS: Force-enable Developer Mode
– PongoOS: Fix mach port patches that prevented tfp0 from working
– PongoOS: KPF support for up to 16.4.1 (16.5 and 1616 unknown as of yet, 17.0 not supported)
– PongoOS: Refactor DeviceTree support, “dt” command is now a lot more festurefulNote: the Linux builds were updated on 14, May 2024.
The old builds erroneously used dynamic linking, which limited them to systems that use glibc. The new builds use static linking like previous releases did.
It’s worth noting that palera1n v2.0.0 beta 9.2 doesn’t add support for iPadOS and tvOS 18 as of yet — this is still being worked on. Instead, the update is only intended to include the latest version of checkra1n.
Existing palera1n users who wish to update to the latest build can run the following command in Terminal:
sudo /bin/sh -c "$(curl -fsSL https://static.palera.in/scripts/install.sh)"
New or prospective users are highly advised to use the latest build at the time they begin their palera1n journey. This is to ensure the smoothest user experience possible.
Please note that because palera1n operates using the checkm8 hardware-based bootrom exploit, this isn’t a jailbreak that Apple can patch with a software update. All the company can do is put more roadblocks in the way, only to be defeated later down the road, or they can stop issuing software updates to those older devices, like they did with the iPhone X starting with iOS 17.
If you’re interested in learning more about palera1n, then we recommend heading over to the project’s GitHub page and browsing our step-by-step tutorial. The tool supports A11 and older devices running iOS & iPadOS 15 and 16, as well as iPadOS 17. Support for more firmware is purportedly coming soon.
