WestJet is actively investigating a cybersecurity incident that disrupted parts of its internal systems and digital services, the airline confirmed on June 13. While customers experienced issues accessing the mobile app and website, the airline has emphasized that its flight operations and scheduling have remained unaffected.

“We have activated specialized internal teams in cooperation with law enforcement and Transport Canada to investigate the matter and limit impacts,” WestJet said in an official statement.

The disruption began on Thursday, prompting the airline to restrict access to some of its digital platforms while containment measures were put in place. Despite the technical challenges, passengers continued to board flights and no delays related to the cyber event were reported.

“We are expediting efforts to maintain the safety of our operation and safeguard sensitive data and personal information for both our guests and employees,” the airline added. “We apologize to all guests for any disruption.”

By June 14, WestJet reported steady progress toward securing its digital environment, though details about the nature or origin of the incident remain limited. There has been no confirmation so far on whether ransomware, data theft, or a third-party vulnerability was involved.

Julia Brunet, a spokeswoman for WestJet, reassured customers that “WestJet continues to actively respond to a cybersecurity incident. Our operations remain safe and stable.”

Transport Canada confirmed its involvement in the investigation, noting that safety had not been compromised. “Upon learning of the incident, Transport Canada worked closely with WestJet and federal security partners, including law enforcement, to ensure there were no impacts on the safety and security of WestJet flight operations,” a spokesperson said.

While WestJet has not disclosed the scope or scale of the breach, the airline is urging customers to exercise caution when handling unsolicited messages or sharing personal information.
