While the iOS Messages app supports a typing indicator within conversations, it’s possible with a jailbreak to have a system-wide typing indicator that you can see from anywhere in iOS when someone begins typing to you, even if you’re not currently using the Messages app.
This is possible with the release of a new and free jailbreak tweak called TypeMillennium by iOS developer 0xjf, which as you can see in the screenshot example above, adds a toast notification to the top of your screen, just below the notch, allowing you to see when someone begins typing to you, and who.
In the case of our example, the toast notification appears as a modestly sized white bubble with the full name of the person who’s typing, as well as the text “is typing…” to let us know that the person is actively typing a message to us even though we aren’t in the Messages app to see the in-app typing indicator.
Once installed, TypeMillennium adds a dedicated preference pane to the Settings app where you can enable or disable the tweak on demand:
It’s worth noting that a respring is required to save your changes after toggling the tweak on or off, and the tweak will automatically prompt you to do so when you toggle the switch.
It’s also worth noting that TypeMillennium is specifically intended for iMessage, as RCS messaging debuted with iOS & iPadOS 17, which are largely un-jailbreakable apart from a small subset of checkm8-vulnerable iPads. The tweak is not intended for third-party messaging apps.
Those interested in giving the TypeMillennium jailbreak tweak a try can download it for free from the developer’s personal repository via their favorite package manager app.
If you aren’t already using the developer’s personal repository, then you can add it to your package manager app of choice by using the URL provided below:
