In a bout of potential good news for iOS & iPadOS 17.0 users — specifically 17.0, and not any other version of iOS & iPadOS 17 — it seems that a method to install TrollStore has been uncovered.
In a post shared to X (formerly Twitter) by @MasterMike88, and further echoed by TrollStore lead developer Lars Fröder (@opa334dev), we learn that anyone who still has a device on iOS or iPadOS 17.0 and has been holding off on updates should continue to do so.
According to the post, there is now a legitimate TrollStore installation method for all devices on iOS & iPadOS 17.0. It has not been released yet, and it won’t be for some time, but it’s coming… and prospective TrollStore users are advised to sit tight.
Update: Some people have been doubting the realism of the situation, so TrollStore co-developer @alfiecg_dev posted on X to confirm the validity of the claim:
TrollStore is a perma-signing utility that allows iPhone and iPad users to install unsigned apps on their device without the App Store and without an Apple ID. After downloading an app file (.ipa or .tipa), the app can be installed on-device without a computer and remains usable virtually forever without the need to re-sign the app as you would normally have to do with sideloading methods like AltStore and Sideloadly.
TrollStore also grants elevated privileges that make using jailbreak tweaks inside of apps possible. It can even allow for the installation of the Serotonin semi-jailbreak on supported devices, which allows jailbreak tweaks to be used via the Procursus bootstrap without an actual jailbreak. TrollStore itself isn’t a jailbreak; it merely exploits a CoreTrust bug to great success.
We’ve seen lots of different ways to install TrollStore on different device and firmware combinations over the years (excluding 17.0), including the following:
- How to install TrollStore on iOS 14.0-16.6.1 with TrollInstallerX
- How to install TrollStore on iOS 14.0-15.6.1 with TrollHelperOTA
- How to install TrollStore on A12+ devices on iOS 16.0-16.6.1 with TrollStar
- How to install TrollStore on iOS 14.0-15.8.1 with TrollMisaka
Having said that, the importance of an iOS & iPadOS 17.0 installation method for TrollStore cannot be overstated, as this is the latest firmware that actually supports TrollStore, and it’s unknown if it will ever be supported on any newer firmware.
As for iOS & iPadOS 18, it seems that Apple has further reduced the likelihood of anything TrollStore-related ever happening again. More security mitigations would severely affect any attempts to make TrollStore for iOS & iPadOS 18 possible, even with a new CoreTrust bug.
If you’re on iOS & iPadOS 17.0, we recommend staying there and waiting for the new TrollStore installation method. Great things come to those who wait.
