Tasker gets a lot of flak for being complicated, but it doesn’t have to be in order to be useful
Tasker version 6.5.5 Beta uses an AI generator to create working widgets from just a prompt. It takes advantage of the Widget v2 system introduced earlier this year. That release added advanced layout options and scrollable icons. But now you don’t need to build widgets from scratch. AI will do it for you, complete with scheduled refreshes, custom colors, and interactive elements.
A huge quality of life improvement for new and veteran users alike
Tasker’s developer announced the update in a thorough Reddit post. They posted a screen capture and a video of the new widget creation in action. You can now ask Tasker to create a widget like “show me the hottest Reddit posts every 6 hours,” and it will generate a time-triggered automation, complete with a widget layout and even a click action to open posts. The AI is trained to format colors and sizes into their own variables so you can tweak the results easily.
The AI generator can also now build time-based and app-triggered profiles on request. It will interpret Tasker’s Exported Descriptions to rebuild a project or profile for import. This will be an enormous time-saver for anyone who has ever shared or received Tasker profiles as text descriptions. The amount of curse words directed at phone screens is sure to be greatly reduced by this.
This beta also introduces persistent AI conversations. This means you can return to chats later to refine requests or troubleshoot generated profiles. Corrections you make in these persistent chats reuse the same project names, so your earlier imports get overwritten cleanly. However, you can long-press to delete messages or clear your chat history completely.
Support for different AI is included
Support for both Gemini and OpenRouter is included. Also, the AI FAB on the main screen can be hidden. Other additions include new output variables for calendar events, better behavior in the Remote Action Execution, and bug fixes for JSON handling.
You can get Tasker version 6.5.5 Beta right now through the Play Store beta program, or sideload it directly through the developer’s site. If you’ve ever been intimidated by
Tasker
‘s complexity, AI might be your new favorite friend.
