If you’ve ever tried going to a concert over the past ten years, you’ve most certainly run into issues at some point where tickets just weren’t available or were so expensive that it wasn’t possible to afford them. While going to a concert is still a luxury, things used to so much simpler.
You’d hop in a virtual queue, wait it out, and secure your tickets. Now, there are so many variables to the experience that make tickets harder to come by. We’ve seen aggressive resellers that use bots, ticket distributors using dynamic pricing for in-demand events, and more.
Fans are being left out, and there’s no easy solution. Of course, that doesn’t mean that artists and other platforms haven’t tried. With that said, it looks like Spotify is taking its own shot at solving the problem, introducing its new Reserved service, promising to get tickets into the hands of the most dedicated fans without any issues.
It’s a clever way to get tickets out there, but how many tickets are we talking about
We heard about Reserved by Spotify just a few weeks ago, but it’s now rolling out to Premium subscribers in the US. The goal is to get tickets into the hands of loyal fans. So, how does this new feature choose the right person? Well, Spotify isn’t really clear about this, stating that it will “reward active fan engagement” but will look at “streams, saves, and shares, as well as location.”
It’s intentionally not sharing how it chooses fans, so that the system can’t be gamed. It wants the selection to be as organic as possible, making it possible for an artist’s “most dedicated” fans to secure tickets. How will you know that you’ve secured tickets? Well, Spotify will make it clear by showing off tickets to a show on the home screen.
Just in case you miss it, the app will also alert the user using email, push notifications, and a message in the “Your Updates” section. Once Reserved is open to you, you’ll be able to see what dates are available and when your window to grab two tickets will be open. You will have one day to purchase the tickets the moment they are released on the app.
The good news is that there will be a range of tickets available, with different prices, sections, and even city locations. You don’t always have to plan to go to your local event. The final part of the checkout process will be handled by Ticketmaster. If you miss out, Spotify says you’re going to be out of luck, so be sure to grab the tickets when available.
We like the idea of what Spotify is doing here, but how many tickets is the brand holding for each one of these Reserved sessions? Spotify only shares that the “number will vary by artist, tour, and market.” For all we know, it could be just a handful of Reserved guests in a crowd of thousands. But, I guess it’s better than not being able to get tickets at all. You get the full details here.
