Grab it and spruce up your home screen
According to multiple user posts on the Google Pixel subreddit, the screen brightness automatically alternates between too high and too low at regular intervals while watching videos on full-screen. One Pixel 8 Pro user claims this fluctuation in brightness occurs every few minutes while using the Netflix app, and generally lasts “for a second or so” (via Android Authority).
A Pixel 9 Pro XL user appears to be facing the same issue, but claims the problem isn’t limited to just Netflix, with the brightness fluctuation also happening on Prime Video. Another Pixel owner claims to have noticed this glitch in Disney+ and YouTube, so it’s not limited to a particular app. However, it’s unclear what Pixel model they’re using.
You may be able to fix it manually
According to a Pixel 7 Pro user, the intermittent fluctuation in screen brightness only occurs with subtitles turned on, at least on Netflix. Meanwhile, a Pixel 9 owner suggests that turning off Smooth Display from your Pixel phone’s Settings could help.
This isn’t the only screen brightness-related complaint following the release of Android 15 QPR2, though. In a separate post, a user claims their Pixel 9 Pro’s wallpaper is extremely dim even at full brightness, while the surrounding icons reportedly reflect the true brightness. A few Pixel 8 users in the comments have corroborated these findings, so this isn’t an isolated incident.
It looks like Google will have its hands full fixing some of these bugs in the coming days. The company hasn’t commented on either of the complaints so far, though we’d be surprised if the Android development team wasn’t at least aware of them.
