Whenever I need to understand something on my screen, I hold down the home button and circle whatever’s giving me trouble.
Then I get a Google Search of the item, with an AI overview on top. It’s straightforward and gives me quick answers. My only difficulty is drawing a proper circle with my finger each time.
One time when I needed AI assistance, I tried swiping from the bottom corner. I selected Share screen with Live and asked Gemini to explain what was on my screen.
I was impressed by the result. I found a more seamless way to interact with my AI chatbot.

I overlooked the feature I actually wanted
Circle to Search was easier to discover
I can’t be blamed for initially relying on Circle to Search. Google makes it easy to access on Android phones.
You tap and hold on either the home button on three-button navigation or the gesture-navigation bar to activate Circle to Search. It was an easy habit to absorb, since Google Assistant had always been associated with this command.
I had to make swiping from the bottom corner my new habit. It was difficult at first to get it right, especially with the phone case I use. Any phone case that protrudes upward hinders the gesture.
After I mastered the gesture, sharing my screen with Live became my go-to AI chat function.
Circle to Search provides an AI overview as part of a Google Search, while Share screen with Live starts an active conversation with Gemini over what’s shown on screen.
Gemini Live uses only spoken explanations. This lets me ask follow-up questions without extra taps. I can also continue browsing to another part of an app to make my next AI inquiry.
Circle to Search initially takes fewer steps (hold the Home button and circle the item) compared to Share screen with Live (swipe from the bottom edge and select Screen share with Live > Start screen recording).
However, after you complete the final step, screen sharing with Live becomes fluid.
Screen share with Live doesn’t require a paid Google AI subscription. Any Android user can try it without spending a cent.
The follow-ups made all the difference
A few adjustments improved the conversation
There have been several instances when sharing my screen with Live became useful. Its biggest contribution was when I needed explanations for unfamiliar terms on technical articles and specification sheets.
I was comparing headphones one time and wasn’t accustomed to some of the terminology. I asked Gemini Live to help me understand the differences between open- and closed-back headphones. I needed a refresher on the impedance ratings.
After getting a thorough explanation, I moved to the next page to compare headphone models. Gemini Live stayed with me throughout the process. It felt unusual to have my AI assistant follow me wherever I went, but it was faster than reactivating the prompt each time.
As I got used to sharing my screen with Live, I learned to be more specific with my questions. I’d tell Gemini to limit its answers to two sentences; other times, I’d ask Gemini to talk slower or expound on a term I didn’t grasp.
To create more natural conversations with Gemini Live, go to Settings and turn on Interrupt Live responses. This lets you ask a follow-up question without waiting for the AI assistant to stop talking.
The biggest downside to working with Gemini Live is the constant speech. My inner introvert couldn’t keep a conversation with an AI assistant all the time.
The workaround was to share the screen with Gemini using a slightly different set of steps:
- Open Gemini from any screen.
- Tap the + symbol beside Ask Gemini.
- Select Screen in the upper-left corner.
- Type the question instead of speaking it.
This method is helpful when talking isn’t an option, whether I’m in a quiet workplace or on public transport. It requires extra steps and makes writing follow-up questions more tedious, but it’s the only option for those particular situations.
Since this is still AI, Gemini sometimes didn’t understand the question or refused to answer. It’s frustrating when I know that Circle to Search would’ve been the faster alternative.
I like comparing current-generation AI to my four-year-old child. Both try their best to understand my questions, but neither can truly grasp the context.
For now, nothing is more accurate than doing a manual Google search and researching something on my own.
I wish I had considered this feature sooner
I’m not totally letting go of Circle to Search. It works when my spoken words aren’t enough to explain what I need.
If I have no clue what’s on my screen, I can’t ask Gemini Live by pointing at the item. Circle to Search comes in handy when I want to know what’s in front of me. From there, I can continue with Share screen with Live.
Learning to share my active screen with Gemini Live feels like making a new friend. It’s an artificial friend, but one that doesn’t get mad when I interrupt it or ditch it for a Google search when I’m too lazy to talk.
