Foldables stopped being weird the day Apple made one; now Samsung is cashing the check

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9 at a starting price of $2000. That same week, Galaxy Z Fold 8 sales in South Korea went up 10%.

The Duo doesn’t reach stores until October 23, which means some people watched an Apple keynote, then walked into a store and bought a Samsung.

Apple has a strange power in consumer tech. It sells premium hardware, sure, but I’d argue its bigger product is deciding what qualifies as normal, and the foldable phone just got its permission slip.

Samsung is eight generations ahead of Apple

Nobody buying a Fold 8 today is settling. Samsung is eight generations into this. The Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams and unfolds to 4.5 millimeters.

Samsung paired a redesigned hinge with a new titanium-reinforced display layer meant to keep the crease from deepening over time, and it says the phone is rated for 500,000 folds.

The iPhone Duo is a first-generation product and hasn’t published fold-cycle or hinge-durability ratings for the Duo. It weighs 254 grams and measures 5.2 millimeters unfolded.

To be fair to Apple, the extra 53 grams buy a grade 5 titanium frame, IP68 dust and water resistance (the Fold 8 is IP48), and a rated 31 hours of video on the inner display, compared with 26 hours for the Fold 8.

They’re defensible trade-offs, but Samsung has spent seven generations engineering its way out of trade-offs like these.

Fitbit and AirPods show how far Apple’s halo reaches

We’ve seen this effect before

Apple keeps doing this. It waits until a category is proven, strips away the stigma of buying in, and its rivals often cash in first.

When Apple Watch rumors peaked in 2014, the consensus was that standalone fitness trackers had no future.

The opposite happened. Wrist computers became something people expected to own, and Fitbit’s shipments nearly doubled in 2015 to 21 million devices in the same year.

Consumers saw Apple validate the concept and then shopped the whole market. AirPods did it again in 2016. Apple killed the headphone jack, and the Bluetooth headphone market grew.

So the Duo is playing the same mind game with flexible screens, and I think it’s working better than it should.

A $2,000 anchor makes the Fold 8 look like a bargain

Apple supplied the psychological trigger, and Samsung is closing the deal on price.

A $2,000 starting cost is a hard anchor for someone who decided 10 minutes ago that they want a folding phone.

In the US, the list prices are only $100 apart, but the Fold 8 is selling for $1,650 right now, and carrier deals tied to a new line go much further.

One of these phones is eight generations in and discounted. The other is first-generation, full price, and still weeks from release.

For anyone who isn’t locked into iOS, the sensible choice is hard to argue with. You get a foldable now, for less, without the first-generation risk.

What Android foldable owners get out of this

Apple could finally fix letterboxed apps on foldables

There is something in this for existing Fold owners. Apple is about to make lazy developers care about foldable screens.

For seven years, the worst part of a Galaxy Z Fold has been opening a popular app and finding a skinny vertical window marooned between black letterbox bars.

Google asked first and eventually mandated. Recent Android releases ignore an app’s attempt to lock orientation or block resizing above a certain screen width. Apple is joining the effort.

Looking broken on a two-thousand-dollar iPhone is a cheap look, so the work gets done.

You don’t have to buy the Duo to benefit from it

Foldables are past their awkward phase. The hardware is mature, and the software is finally getting the push it needed.

Apple showing up late validates every year and every dollar Samsung put into the Z Fold line.

And you can take the win without spending two thousand dollars on an unproven first-generation phone.

Unless you’re an Apple fanboy. I’d rather buy a mature, discounted Android foldable and cash the check Apple just wrote.
