Just a few years ago, it seemed like everybody wanted in on the free ad-supported television game. Google TV’s FAST offering, which later became known as Freeplay, was adding channels left and right. Plex was in on it, and longtime stalwarts in the space, like Pluto TV, Tubi, and Xumo, kept gaining popularity.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s IMDb TV app was rebranded to Freevee, and the company gave it a vote of confidence by announcing plans to expand the service with lots more original programming. But all good things must end, and Amazon eventually announced that it would be shuttering the Freevee app at the end of last year as its content was moved to Prime Video.

Those live channels have indeed been available in the Prime Video app since late 2024, but Freevee itself has continued to exist as normal in the eight months that have passed since Amazon announced it would shut down. Now, however, users are being notified that the end is finally coming.

Say your final goodbyes to the Freevee app by next month

According to AFTVNews, Amazon has informed users that the app will be shut down in August 2025. A message urges people to “Continue watching your favorite Freevee Originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed.”

While it’s not a total loss since the content is still available, users might be disappointed to know that they’ll soon have to drill down into the Prime Video app to get their free streaming TV fix. Which makes plenty of business sense from Amazon’s perspective — even though you don’t need a subscription, scrolling past all those Amazon Originals and premium content on the way to the Freevee section just might entice a few users to sign up for Prime.
