Most of us get by with Google Maps and call it a day. However, if you need a little more of the world at your fingertips, Google Earth is a solid solution. The app is available on the web and on Android, and there’s even a desktop app.
Those who are looking to dive a little deeper can also access Google Earth Pro. Now, if you’re someone who’s using Earth Pro on desktop, we have some bad news. Google has announced that it will no longer offer the app for download on desktop in the near future (via Android Authority).
You still have some time
The news might come as a bit of a shock, but the silver lining here is that the app will continue to work even after it’s been pulled. While Google does encourage users to rely on the web interface and Android app, you can still download the desktop app as of now from Google directly.
Google shares that it will officially pull the download link for the app on June 25, 2027. You read that right, you have about a year before Google gets rid of the app for desktop. So, you still have quite a while to grab the software and enjoy it if you haven’t taken a look. But, if you’ve never used it, you might be asking yourself how you can use it.
I’ve personally used the app a few times, but it provides high-resolution satellite imagery of locations on and off the grid. You also get 3D terrain mapping, along with access to historical imagery, measurements, GIS integration, and more. While it’s a great tool for professionals and hobbyists, it can also be a lot of fun for the average joe.
As stated before, if you don’t feel like installing the app on your PC, phone or tablet, you don’t need to. You can just use the web version, which is fairly comprehensive. Some tools are locked behind a subscription, but the standard account is absolutely free and good enough for most people, especially if you just want to explore a little.
Those looking for a bit more can sign up for a Professional plan that costs $75/month, while the Professional Advanced costs $150/month. And if you have no interest in exploring the Earth in this much detail, you can at least have some fun with the Google Earth flight simulator that’s now available on the web.
