Google’s software-side upgrades and features can’t really be described as a walled garden, at least not when it comes to Gemini. Google hasn’t limited Gemini’s core functionality to its own device, with features not only expanding to other Androids, but also iOS devices.

The proliferation of its assistants hasn’t been limited to phones, it’s been this way for smart home gadgets too, with Google actively pushing its Google Assistant to third-party smart home hardware too. This, however, hasn’t been the case with Gemini.

Gemini’s smart home rollout has kicked off, but it has been limited to users in early access in the US. Device-wise too, the rollout has been limited to a few devices, namely:

  • Google Nest Hub (2nd gen)
  • Google Nest Hub Max
  • Google Nest Hub (1st gen)
  • Google Home Max
  • Google Nest Mini (2nd gen)
  • Google Home Mini (1st gen)
  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Home
  • Google Nest Wifi point

As is evident by the list, support, at least up until now, has been limited to first-party devices. That could soon change.

Highlighted by Reddit user infosage, Gemini might have already started rolling out on some third-party smart displays (via Android Authority).

Here’s the evidence

“Update in progress. Check back soon to get started with Gemini for Home,” reads a Google Assistant prompt on the user’s Lenovo Smart Display. For what it’s worth, user infosage‘s post is roughly 12 hours old at this point, and hasn’t been updated since. We’re waiting for the OP to come back online and answer the several questions left by commenters on the post.

It’s worth noting that Google hasn’t shared any current plans about expanding Gemini access to Lenovo’s smart home hardware. The same goes for Lenovo, as it hasn’t hinted at Gemini support yet.

The tech giant did, however, in a ‘Top Questions & Answers about Gemini for Home’ community post, state that it was “working with third-party speaker companies to bring Gemini for Home to more devices.”

The appearance of Gemini is great news not just for Lenovo Smart Display users, but also for users of other third-party Google Assistant-enabled devices that will soon potentially be out of the grave. If and when functionality rolls out widely, Gemini for Home voice assistant will arrive as a core update at no extra cost.

It is unclear if third-party devices will receive Gemini Live’s functionality. If they do, it will be limited to those with a Google Home Premium subscription in both the Standard and Advanced plans.
