The Google Play Store is our go-to destination for downloading new Android apps and games or updating the ones we already have on our device. However, not everybody updates their Android apps the same way. While some like to enable auto update and let the Play Store handle the process on its own, others (like me) would rather have a pile of updates pending and then hit that “Update all” button every once in a while.
Those who prefer the latter also have to deal with the Play Store’s current limitation of three app updates at a time, while others on the list are marked as pending. It looks like Google is finally doing something about upping that limit, as SammyGuru discovered.
The publication found that the Play Store now allows up to six concurrent app updates, a far cry from the existing cap of just three. However, it doesn’t appear to be rolling out widely, including on my Pixel smartphone. This is likely a server-side update, meaning users don’t need to take any action on their part to gain this improved limit for simultaneous downloads (via Android Authority).
In addition to helping users update their existing apps quickly, this should also expedite the process of installing apps on a brand-new smartphone.
Not the first time the Play Store has tested an increased download limit
Current vs Upcoming
As Android users will likely remember, Google experimented with a similar project last year on multiple occasions, including the current limit of three simultaneous app updates/downloads. It didn’t take long before reports of four concurrent updates appeared, indicating that Google may not be done with increasing the limit.
The last time we heard about the Play Store’s app update limit was in October last year, when it seemed like Google might go all out and allow unlimited updates and downloads. It’s been nearly a year since then, and there has been little progress on this front, as users can still only update three apps at a time.
There’s enough reason for us to believe that this newly discovered cap of six simultaneous updates will be widely rolled out. However, given the inconsistency we’ve seen with this particular upgrade over the past 18 months or so, we’re not overly optimistic.
Do you see the ability to update six apps concurrently on the Google Play Store?
