Scam calls are a growing headache and often hint that your number is floating around where it shouldn’t be. Most phones don’t do much to stop them, but NordVPN, best known for its VPN service, has just added a new tool for Android to check incoming calls in real time and flag anything sketchy before you even pick up.
Scam Call Protection, NordVPN’s latest feature, is designed to keep an eye on incoming calls for anything suspicious. As per the company’s announcement, it looks at call patterns and metadata to sniff out potential scammers or telemarketers, then gives you a heads-up if something seems off.
The new scam call protection is now part of NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro, which already handles things like malware, phishing, ads, and trackers. It’s a clear move to stretch security beyond just web browsing. For now, though, it’s only available to users in the US.
Pixel users might find this feature a bit familiar. Google’s phones already use AI to flag scam calls and even give live warnings mid-call. But NordVPN takes a different route. It skips the audio entirely and focuses just on call metadata. More importantly, it works on any Android phone with the NordVPN app, and everything stays on your device, so nothing gets stored or sent off somewhere.
Future upgrades: smarter detection and caller ID tags
Scam call protection is baked right into the NordVPN app on Android. Down the line, NordVPN is planning to level it up by tagging legit callers, sorting calls into categories like healthcare or banking, and letting users flag scam numbers themselves.
While the feature lives inside the NordVPN Android app, it doesn’t rely on the VPN being turned on. So even if you’re not connected to the VPN, the scam warnings still have your back.
To enable it, just head to the Threat Protection section in the NordVPN app and switch on Scam Call Protection. Once it’s active, it quietly runs in the background. NordVPN also says iOS support is on the way soon.
