The Gemini app has already assumed Google Assistant’s red, blue, green, and yellow color scheme, and it is now coming for more of the OG voice assistant’s features.
For reference, Gemini has already incorporated several previous Google Assistant hallmarks, including support for making calls, sending text messages, setting alarms and timers, controlling media, and a lot more. Now, thanks to Gemini’s Google Home integration, the AI assistant is gaining the ability to broadcast messages too.
For reference, the functionality was first revealed last month, and according to the folks over at 9to5Google, it has begun landing now.
Of course, you’ll need to enable Google Home under Apps, which means that Gemini’s App Activity should be turned on too. To do so, open the Gemini app, tap on your profile icon on the top right, tap on Apps and enable Google Home. If App Activity hasn’t been enabled, you’ll be prompted with a shortcut to enable the feature.
Gradual rollout is underway
Once enabled, you should simply be able to call on Gemini to broadcast your message to Nest speakers and smart displays connected to your Google Home account. You’ll be able to do so via the app, or through the overlay shortcut.
You’ll be able to suffix your requests by specifying if you want to broadcast to make its way to all connected devices in your house, or just to a specific device or room.
For reference, Gemini has previously been able to broadcast messages, but it had to tap into Google Assistant to power the functionality. The new integration means Gemini can now handle your broadcast requests directly.
Support is reportedly rolling out now. As of writing, Gemini on our devices is still deferring to Google Assistant to fulfill broadcast requests, so support doesn’t seem to have been rolled out widely just yet.
