While the iPhone already has a Dark Mode-compatible keyboard built in from the factory, the problem on newer devices is that the keyboard isn’t dark enough to truly take advantage of the iPhone’s OLED display.
iOS developer dayanch96 wanted to change this, and so they released a new and free jailbreak tweak called OledKeyboard that optimizes the iPhone’s keyboard for OLED displays by changing the color to true blacks, as depicted in the screenshot examples above.
Dayanch96 announced the project in a post shared to /r/jailbreak this weekend, and it seems to be receiving lots of praise from the responding subreddit members.
Just so we’re being fair to other developers, we should note that the concept has been around for some time. We showed you a jailbreak tweak back in 2021 called Dark Keys Reborn that essentially did the same thing on iOS 14 devices. It’s worth noting, however, that OledKeyboard works with iOS 15 and later, including on the latest rootless jailbreaks and the RootHide bootstrap.
With no options to configure, OledKeyboard simply changes the way your iPhone’s keyboard looks when you turn on Dark Mode.
If you keep Dark Mode turned on all the time like I do, then you’ll see this new keyboard all the time. If you configure your iPhone to use Dark Mode depending on the time of day it is, then you’ll see this new keyboard at the time of day that Dark Mode toggles on. Likewise, if you never use Dark Mode, then you’ll never see this new keyboard.
