When watching videos on your iPhone or iPad, you will often be able to close the app currently playing the video and a floating Picture-in-Picture video player will appear on your screen so that you can keep doing other things on your device while the video continues – perfect for multitasking.
But it’s worth noting that the OEM Picture-in-Picture video player uses rounded corners, much like what you’d find on a Home Screen app icon. This can cut off small details from the video window that may impact your viewing experience, which is why iOS developer uz.ra came out with a free jailbreak tweak called SquarePiP.
As you can see in the before (left) and after (right) screenshot examples above, SquarePiP forces the native Picture-in-Picture floating video player interface to exhibit squared corners instead of rounded ones. This gives you the same full viewing experience that you’d have in whatever app the video is playing from, but with the perks of Picture-in-Picture in full force.
SquarePiP doesn’t have any options to configure, nor is it limited to certain apps. Instead, any app that supports Picture-in-Picture video playback will be affected by the tweak’s effects, including those played in Safari, YouTube, and other native video player-using apps. Note that some apps use proprietary video players and may not support Picture-in-Picture. Likewise, these apps won’t be affected by SquarePiP.
Whether or not the squared corners of SquarePiP offers anything meaningful to you as the video consumer remains to be seen, especially since it’s very much a subjective aesthetic. On the other hand, it’s nice for the option to be available just in case you prefer the truly squared corner video player.
