On Thursday, Verizon said it will begin issuing $20 credits to customers’ accounts affected by Wednesday’s cellular service outage.
The outage, which brought both voice and data services down for many customers of the major wireless carrier, lasted from roughly noon until after 10 pm ET.
“Yesterday, we did not meet the standard of excellence you expect, and that we expect of ourselves,” the company posted in a statement on X. “To help provide some relief to those affected, we will give you a $20 account credit that can easily be redeemed by logging into the MyVerizon app.”
Verizon apologizes for the outage
Interestingly, Verizon also noted that “This credit isn’t meant to make up for what happened,” and that “No credit really can.” If you are still experiencing problems with your cell service, Verizon noted in the statement that you should restart your device by powering it down and then powering it back on. The company said that would be the fastest way to reconnect your phone to the network.
According to NBC News, New York State Assemblyman Anil Beephan Jr. has asked the chair of the Federal Communications Commission to investigate what exactly happened. In return, the FCC noted that it was aware of the Verizon outage and was monitoring the situation. FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez added her own statement on X: “I’m paying close attention to reports of wireless outages across the country, which appear to be affecting primarily Verizon customers. I’ll be asking our Consumer/Public Safety Bureaus to keep a close eye on this situation and investigate the source of this service disruption.”
The last time Verizon suffered a major outage was during Labor Day weekend last year. According to the company’s outage map, major cities such as New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles were heavily affected by the outage.
If you were among the many affected by yesterday’s outage and want to claim the credit, log in to your Verizon app. Verizon noted that the $20 “should cover multiple days of service.”
