In case you didn’t know, K-12 students in New York will be having quite a new experience when they go back to school this year. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York announced in May that smartphones will be banned in schools from the time the first bell rings until the last bell chimes for dismissal.
When it comes to the details, smartphones and other internet-enabled personal devices will be barred from use during the entire time school is in session. Schools will need to come up with their own solutions to properly store these types of devices on site. Most importantly, parents will be able to contact students when necessary.
A simple solution for this problem
While all of this may sound quite drastic, there is a solution that is approved by Governor Hochul and will allow a student to carry a communication device to school. For the time being, “simple cellphones without internet capability” are allowed, which means you can always grab a dumb phone if you want to stay connected.
That’s where US Mobile’s latest plan comes into play, offering unlimited talk and text without data for $15/month. Now, this isn’t the cheapest plan out there, but if you’re someone that needs to meet the strict restrictions, then this one is going to be a perfect fit. In total, you’ll get the Nokia 2780 Flip and a full year of service for $180. The following year, the plan will cost just $96.
This solution isn’t going to be for everyone, but for a student or parent that needs to get in contact immediately without any buffers, this is probably going to be the only solution available for now. There’s no telling how long any of this will last, but at least it’s a move in a different direction in order to create distraction-free zones at school.
A smartphone has become a vital tool over the past decade, but there is an overwhelming number of complaints that we’ve become a generation that’s stuck to our screens. And like anything, moderation is always the best way to go. So if this new movement proves to be successful in helping young individuals unplug from their phones for several hours, maybe it’s a solution that will roll out to other states as well.
If interested in grabbing a new line of service that is compliant with the new rules, you can head to the US Mobile website for more details. Signing up is easy, and the cost isn’t all that much for just the one line. However, if you’re spending money on a regular line as well, or are already on a family plan, this added line with little use outside the school could seem a little costly.
