Most modern flagship Android smartphones are starting to look the same. They offer premium materials, the latest Android OS, great cameras, and some AI features — then call it a day. Sure, companies add their own flair, but the core experience has started to feel identical on the latest Android devices. And when they break, repairs can be a nightmare.

Fairphone has been offering smartphones that are repairable, with parts users can order and replace themselves instead of visiting a repair shop. Today, the company unveiled the Fairphone 6, taking another step to stand out in an increasingly uniform market.

For the Fairphone 6, the company has partnered with Murena, makers of the de-Googled operating system /e/OS. While it still runs on Android, it doesn’t come with Google Play Services or Google apps by default. Instead, it uses microG to mimic Google’s services and focuses more on a private, tracking-free experience.

Murena says /e/OS is built to block data collection and tracking from third-party apps by default. It also includes its own set of apps like Mail and Calendar, Murena Workspace, Murena Vault for end-to-end encryption, enhanced parental controls, and SMS-based Find My Device.

Fairphone 6 ditches Google for a de-Googled Android OS

Hardware-wise, the company hasn’t revealed much about the Fairphone 6, other than that it features a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor, Gorilla Glass 7i protection, and a larger battery in a smaller form factor, though capacity details are unknown. The phone includes a dynamic 50MP sensor, though it’s unclear whether it’s the main sensor or part of the triple camera setup.

Like its predecessors, the Fairphone 6 features a modular, repairable design. It includes 12 user-replaceable parts, which can be ordered directly from Fairphone and swapped out without visiting a repair shop.

The Fairphone 6 is now available for purchase from Murena’s website in the UK and Europe. It’s also coming to the US, but for now, it’s only available for pre-order. Shipments in the US will begin in August 2025.

The Fairphone 6 becomes even more ethical with its repairable design intact and a privacy-focused, deGoogled OS out of the box. It features the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor and Gorilla Glass 7i display protection. Fairphone continues to offer a 5-year warranty on this device.
