This tweak enables Apple’s native pairing UI for the new AirPods on pre-iOS 12.2 devices

If you’re trying to use a pair of second-generation AirPods with an iOS handset running any firmware below iOS 12.2, then you’re likely all too familiar with the ‘limited’ functionality that ensues. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way, especially for jailbreakers.

AirPort is a newly-released jailbreak tweak by iOS developer Boo that makes second-generation AirPods behave more like the original AirPods on pre-iOS 12.2 firmware. More specifically, it ensures that the beautiful pairing UI appears when you open your AirPods in the proximity of your handset and displays the proper AirPods-style glyphs in the Battery widget on the Today page.

AirPort also comes with some additional bells and whistles intended to augment your AirPods experience, and these work with both the first and second-generation AirPods and include custom animations. For example, you can make your AirPods look black instead of white in the pairing interface if you wanted to:

Once installed, AirPort adds a preference pane to the Settings app where you can configure the tweak to your liking:

Here, you can:

  • Toggle AirPort on or off on demand
  • Toggle support for second-generation AirPods
  • Enable or disable a custom pairing animation
  • Choose your desired pairing animation:
    • Default
    • Wireless case
    • Black AirPods
  • Reset all options to their defaults

The developer provides a Respring button at the bottom of the preference pane so that you can save your changes on demand. Alternatively, you can use the Apply button at the top. It’s recommended that you use one of these buttons every time you make changes to ensure that they’re appended.

While AirPort will mostly appeal to those with second-generation AirPods due to its ability to unlock the native pairing animation and the likes, we’d like to reiterate that the custom animations will work with both first and second-generation AirPods.

If you’re interested in trying AirPort on your jailbroken device, then you can download it for free from the Packix repository in Cydia or Sileo. The tweak supports all jailbroken iOS 11 and 12 devices and is open-source on the developer’s GitHub page.

Will you be adding AirPort to your jailbreak tweak arsenal? Discuss why or why not in the comments section below!
