We’re seven generations in to Samsung’s foldable phone range, and you might have been forgiven for thinking that the new form factor for phones would never properly take off. Thankfully for Samsung, that’s being proven false by the continued success of this one Z Fold phone, with monthly production numbers having been increased by almost a third to match sales.
Samsung is increasing Galaxy Z Fold 7 production numbers for the month of September from 200,000 to 260,000 due to larger than expected demand, according to a report from Korean website TheElec (via PhoneArena).
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has been a surprise hit
A new dawn for foldables?
While it wouldn’t have been fair to call Samsung’s foldable phones a failure, it’s entirely fair to say that the new type of smartphone hasn’t succeeded in pushing out the older slate-style of phone. And while the Z Fold 7 isn’t there either yet, it’s clear Samsung’s newest book-style folding device is having a level of success that Samsung wasn’t expecting, as Samsung is once again raising production numbers higher than previously planned. According to reports from Korea, Samsung is increasing production for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 by 30%, taking it from 200,000 to 260,000 for the month of September.
Samsung already increased numbers for August, indicating that sales continue to jump past Samsung’s expectations. The August product jump is particularly notable, as Samsung had originally planned for 170,000 units, but actually ended up pushing 430,000 out of its factories. That’s a massive increase of over 150%.
This comes after the Z Fold 7 enjoyed record pre-order sales, beating the Z Flip line for the first time since the two phones debuted together.
In fact, it’s been a bad year for the Z Flip line altogether. While rising sales are generally good for Samsung as a whole, the company has actually decreased its orders of the Z Flip 7, reflecting the apparent trend for book-style folds over clamshell folds.
The choice between the two types of fold was always going to be one of the biggest battlegrounds for folding phones, and it seems the Z Fold is finally starting to pull ahead. However, with Samsung set to introduce a new tri-fold device, will that dynamic end up being shaken up again? We’ll have to wait and see.
