A few weeks ago, a stray change on a Hindi Google support page gave us hope that we’ll soon be able to change our ‘@gmail.com‘ suffixed email addresses into different ‘@gmail.com’ suffixed addresses.

Now, that dream seems to be coming closer to reality.

The same support page that highlighted the incoming email address change option is now natively available in English, highlighting that the Hindi support page update wasn’t a stray documentation or translation mistake.

“If you choose, you can change your Google Account email that ends in gmail.com to a new address that ends in gmail.com,” reads the English support page.

Google wants to allow us to change our @gmail.com email addresses, and even though support for migration isn’t live for me just yet, the English support page serves as the ‘green light’ that one of the digital landscape’s most permanent aspects is finally becoming flexible.

The ability to change your Google Account email is gradually rolling out to all users and this option may not be available to you yet.

According to the same support page, here’s what will happen when you change your Google Account email from one that ends in gmail.com to a new address that ends in gmail.com:

  • Your previous Google Account email ending in gmail.com will become an alternate email address.
  • You’ll receive emails to both your old and new addresses.
  • The data saved in your account won’t be affected. This includes things like photos, messages and emails sent to your previous email address.
  • You can change back to your previous email address at any time, but you can’t create a new Google Account email ending in gmail.com for the next 12 months. You also can’t delete your new email address.
  • You can sign in with your old or new email address on Google services, such as Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Google Play or Drive.

According to the tech giant, to change your @gmail.com address to a different @gmail.com email address, you must head to http:// myaccount.google.com/google-account-email, navigate to Personal Info > Email > Google Account email > Change Google Account email.

If this option isn’t available to you, support hasn’t rolled out to you just yet.
