If you’re someone who is fully invested in Google’s ecosystem, there’s a pretty good chance you rely on Gmail. The web interface is pretty slick if you manage to dive into the settings and get it optimized, and the app can be pretty good on Android and iOS.

Despite Google’s connection to Android, there are times when the Gmail app on Android doesn’t get the same quality of life enhancements found on iOS, which can be quite surprising. As you can imagine, sometimes it can work the other way around.

A feature long overdue

Of course, it can be quite frustrating having a fragmented experience, but it appears that Google is finally ready to bring one feature that’s been available on web and iOS for ages to the Gmail app on Android. The report comes from 9to5Google, sharing that users will now be able to create labels within the Gmail app on Android going forward.

You can head into the hamburger menu in the app, where you should now see the “Create label” option. Once this option is selected, you will need to create a new label name. From here, you can use this label for all your mail, optimizing and organizing your daily mail flow. It’s a handy feature to have if you’re someone that likes to keep things heavily organized.

It’s a great start, but as 9to5Google notes, the Android app does not have a way to set the label color. This is something that’s available on the web, and as far as I’m aware, customizing label colors is a feature that is also not available on iOS. Another thing 9to5Google points out is that this feature is rolling out on an “account-by-account basis.”

That means you might see the option to make labels on one Gmail account, but not another. So, the typical advice here stands: update your Gmail app to the latest version, be on the lookout for this feature, and most importantly, be patient if you don’t see it yet.
