If you’re like me, a music streaming service is an absolute must-have for walks, drives, and long-distance travel. And while YouTube Music is my service of choice, many friends and colleagues choose to go with Spotify. As someone from the outside looking in, it’s easy to see why, with its impressive catalog of music and podcasts, along with a strong assortment of features you just won’t find on other services.
Of course, Spotify isn’t exactly the cheapest music streaming platform, so you’d expect more for your money. And for the most part, the brand delivers, constantly adding new and useful features. With that said, Spotify is now expanding one of its most anticipated features to date, with Prompted Playlists rolling out to even more users.
Something new that people may actually want
We documented this feature going live back in December, but at the time it was only available to those in beta and in New Zealand. And while the feature is expanding to more countries, like the US and Canada, it’s still going to remain a beta-only feature for now.
Now, you might be asking, what is Prompted Playlist? Well, you enter a prompt, and Spotify will try and build out a playlist that meets those needs. And this isn’t just processing simple requests, but instead, Spotify will really try to dial in and create something tailored to your exact needs at that very moment.
The service breaks down the process:
Spotify generates your playlist using real-time information about the world of music, including trends, charts, culture, and history. Your entire listening history from when you first joined Spotify is factored in, meaning each playlist reflects not only what you love today, but the full arc of your taste. Discover new artists and revisit the favorites who’ve shaped your listening. And when you’re ready for something different, you can guide the algorithm in a whole new direction.
The great thing about this is that you can continuously tweak the prompt and have it further refine the playlist. Plus, the playlist can be refreshed daily or even weekly to get something new. And this is great for those who struggle to find new music through the features already being offered by the service.
If you’re in the US or Canada and are in the beta and want to give this a try, you can head to the Create section and tap Prompted Playlist to get started. As stated before, enter in the prompt, be as specific as you want, and then Spotify will generate a playlist. Don’t be afraid to tweak or change it completely until you find something you love.
