Bubsy 3D is considered one of the worst games of all time. Now it and other notorious retro platformers in this series are being re-released next month as part of Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection.
Atari and Limited Run Games have revealed the release date for this collection, and it’s only a couple of weeks away. I played the collection at GDC 2025 and can vouch for the fact that it’s a love letter to one of the most infamous video game characters to come out of the golden age of video game platformers in the 1990s.
When will Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection be released?
It’s coming out on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch
The latest trailer for Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection confirms that it will launch on September 9. That’s not a date that has any real meaning for the series; it’s just what worked best for the collection.
At this point, Limited Run Games and Atari have spearheaded a lot of retro game re-releases, and Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection follows the format of those closely. It contains almost every game you’d want for the series in question, adds features like rewinding, and contains a library of assets from the original promotion and release of the games in question.
Overall, Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection will contain eight games, although some share a name because the 1990s was an era when different versions of the same game were made for different platforms. Below, you can see the full list of games:
- Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind for SNES
- Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind for Sega Genesis
- Yamaneko Bubsy No Daibouken for Super Famicom
- Bubsy II for SNES
- Bubsy II for Sega Gensis
- Bubsy II for Game Boy
- Bubsy in: Fractured Furry Tales for Atari Jaguar
- Bubsy 3D for PS1
Of all the games featured, Bubsy 3D is the most derided because it’s considered one of the worst-controlling 3D platformers of all time. It came out after Super Mario 64, but it feels more dated than it in every way, from its polygonal visuals to its clunky tank-like controls. Praise for the game is reserved for April Fool’s Day jokes.
For that reason, Bubsy 3D is the game in the collection that Limited Run Games paid the most attention to. There will be a “Refurbished Edition” of Bubsy 3D available in the collection, which gives the game widescreen support and full analog controls.
On top of that, the library part of this collection is also pretty intensive, as it features the pilot for a Bubsy TV show that never got picked up, officially released Bubsy comics, and interviews with those who worked on the franchise in the 1990s.
This may not be a series that people remember fondly, but it’s at least now being preserved in all its glorious infamy on modern platforms. If you’re looking for a platformer that actually feels good to play, you’re better off trying something like Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound.

Is Bubsy a celebrated icon from the mascot wars of the early 90s or a platforming punchline? The team at Limited Run Games has built a new collection to find the answer. Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection explores the franchise’s troubled history and enduring popularity.
Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection is a playable history that includes games, artifacts and interviews. All of the games have been carefully updated for modern platforms using Limited Run’s proprietary Carbon Engine.
