After a string of bad games and the infamous cancellation of Silent Hills, Konami put its premier horror game series on ice for a long time. Given the warm reception Silent Hill f has received, Konami now has some positive vibes to build on as the series continues.

The first reviews for Silent Hill f dropped Monday morning and are very positive. It scored similarly to Silent Hill 2’s remake, proving this franchise still has untapped potential with completely original games.

How positive are the reviews for Silent Hill f?

Critics are really enjoying Konami’s latest game

Metacritic and OpenCritic released their aggrigated scores for Silent Hill f after the first wave of reviews for the horror games dropped, and those score are high. At the time of publishing, Silent Hill f has a Metascore of 85 and a Top Critic Average of 88, respectively. That means Silent Hill is reviewing better than other AAA releases from this month, such as Borderlands 4 and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

Reviews for Silent Hill f praise its narrative, which really shakes things up for the series by being set in 1960s Japan, as well as its puzzle design and generally frightening atmosphere. Game Rant gave it a perfect score, writing that the game “features challenging puzzles, gruesome monsters, and a ton of replay value wrapped in stunning graphics, great performance, and smart quality-of-life features that ensure it meets today’s standards.”

The only part of the game that some critics seem less fond of is the combat, which takes a more melee-heavy, action-focused form than some previous Silent Hill games. Polygon’s generally positive review explains that “combat gets boring after a while” and can become “a slog” as the game goes on.

Thankfully, Silent Hill is a compelling enough adventure that most critics recommend players see the game through. According to Metacritic, Silent Hill f is currently the 32nd-highest reviewed game of the year.

That’s a resounding success for the Silent Hill series, which had a tumultuous history. The first three Silent Hill titles are all considered horror game classics, but after that, the series never really managed to find its footing again. New Silent Hill games kept receiving worse and worse reviews, and the series eventually went dormant for a long time after Hideo Kojima’s Silent Hills was canceled.

Konami has made a concerted effort to revive series like Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid recently. While not every part of this initiative has been positively received, the remake of Silent Hill 2 and now Silent Hill f have been well-liked.

Konami now clearly has positive momentum to build on as they continue this series. Upcoming games that we know of include Bloober Team’s remake of the original Silent Hill and Annapurna Interactive’s Silent Hill: Townfall.
