SentryOne + Pragmatic Works Software: Two Weeks In

By now, I’m sure everyone has heard the news that SentryOne has acquired Pragmatic Works Software (PWS). In case you haven’t, please catch up on Greg’s blog post.

We’re a couple of weeks in, so I thought I would add some perspective now that I’ve had some time to digest everything.

It’s More than More

What does “more than more” mean? It was clear that we would be greatly increasing the size of our product portfolio, and that we would be adding several new colleagues. That was more. When I say more than more, I mean that I did not imagine quite how complementary the new additions to the portfolio would be, and how amazing our new colleagues were.

As I dove into the work the PWS team had done, I was really impressed at what they’ve built. It was almost as if they somehow knew, long ago, that this day would come.

Amazing Customers

A primary component of Product Management is customer empathy. Understanding how people feel, and truly feeling the same way they feel, are two different things. When you have it right, it is easy to tell, because you create a bond with customers that transcends the typical vendor/buyer relationship. As the announcement of the acquisition made its way around the world, the overwhelming support and concern we experienced as we began to answer questions from PWS customers were further confirmation that we’re on the right path.

If any of those customers are reading this, and haven’t had the chance to ask the most common question, I will answer it for you now. The product portfolio that was formerly Pragmatic Works Software will not only be continued, but those products will evolve, just as the existing SentryOne portfolio will. We will be providing more resources and focus overall for the entire portfolio, and they will be integrated in strategic ways that create end to end solutions for the next generation of data professionals. If you love Pragmatic Works Software, we want you to know that the future of those products is brighter than ever.

The Future

One of my “theme strengths” from one of those tests HR makes us take is Futuristic. I guess I can see that, because when I’m not dreaming about jetpacks fueled by peanut butter, I am often contemplating where our product porfolio might go over the next year, 3 years, 5 years, or even 10 years. I can take a good stab at where we’ll be in a year, but 5-10 years is a lot more fuzzy. One thing I know for sure is that the world of the Data Professional has changed. More than ever, data pros need to have end to end solutions available to them. They need to live in the automation or “DevOps” mindset. They need to be prepared to work with transactional, analytic, and mixed workloads. They need fast root cause analysis at their fingertips, and they need to easily apply that automation mindset to remediation of performance and outage issues.

Integrating the product portfolio from PWS helps us provide all of the above much sooner, and I can’t wait to see where we go next.

Until next time,
-JRH
