It seems to be a big day for TrollStore. Not only did we witness the first public release of TrollStore Lite early Monday morning, but just this evening, TrollStore co-developer @alfiecg_dev took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the much-anticipated launch of a TrollStore installation method that supports iOS & iPadOS 17.0.
The new TrollStore installation method, dubbed TrollRestore, supports iOS & iPadOS 15.0-16.6.1, 16.7 RC (20H18), and 17.0 and was developed by JJTech and @dedbeddedbed. TrollRestore makes use of backups to restore the binary to a system app container. Like previous TrollStore installation methods, it replaces a system app of your choice with the TrollHelper binary so that you can install TrollStore on your device. A persistence helper will then need to be installed afterward.
TrollRestore requires the use of a computer, but it doesn’t matter what desktop operating system you have. There is a version available for macOS, Windows, and even Linux. Prospective users will need the latest version of python3, as well as the latest release of TrollRestore for their operating system, which can be had from the project’s GitHub page.
Upon downloading the file from GitHub, you can launch it and you’ll be asked to enter the name of the system app you wish to overwrite with the TrollHelper binary. The Tips app is usually recommended for this step. Upon pressing Enter/Return, TrollHelper will be installed, the device will reboot, and you’ll be able to continue with the TrollStore setup process. The install method has a near-100% success rate.
Like all previous TrollStore setup methods previously made available to the general public, users will open the system app they chose to replace with the TrollHelper binary and use the Install TrollStore button to add TrollStore to their Home Screen. It’s from there that the persistence helper can be installed via the TrollStore app and the user can proceed with perma-signing apps.
With a proper TrollStore installation method now available for iOS & iPadOS 17.0, this means that users can finally install the perma-signing utility on the latest supported firmware version for the first time since iOS & iPadOS 17.0 stopped being signed. Some users managed to upgrade to iOS & iPadOS 17.0 a long time ago, using a hacky method of keeping TrollStore running in the background during the update process. They were quite lucky to be able to do this at the time.
It’s worth noting that iPhone and iPad owners can’t currently upgrade to iOS or iPadOS 17.0 at this time, so unless you’ve been waiting on that firmware, or you’re going to be procuring a device running this firmware already, there’s no way for you to get your device on iOS or iPasOD 17.0 for this process. This is because Apple regularly unsigns outdated firmware to prevent firmware downgrades.
We should also add that no form of jailbreak or semi-jailbreak exists for iOS or iPadOS 17.0 on arm64e devices (iPhone XR and newer), so those making use of this method can only perma-sign apps on their device. It should also be possible to use the RootHide bootstrap to inject jailbreak tweaks into apps, but no system-wide tweak injection exists yet for iOS & iPadOS 17.0.
In any case, it’s awesome to see a new TrollStore installation method finally being made available for the latest supported firmware after such a long time of waiting, and we’re sure those who’ve waited will be so happy to see that their patience paid off.
Likewise, this installation method can also be used on iOS & iPadOS 15.0-16.6.1 and 16.7 RC (20H18), so feel free to give it a try if you’re in that camp of people.
