South Korean tech giant Samsung is aiming to achieve the foldable summit, an intention that it is now clearly labeling with its new foldable display brand. For clarity, no, Samsung isn’t launching a new sub-brand for its foldables. Instead, it’s simply giving its foldable OLED technology a proper designation.
Samsung introduced its foldable display tech to the world with the first Galaxy Fold in 2019. Since then, not only has the tech giant made its foldable displays a lot more durable, it has also made them slimmer and significantly reduced the visibility of the dreaded crease that plagues every bending screen.
Now, essentially in a bid to promote its display tech, Samsung has introduced Mont Flex, an official designation for its foldable OLED screen technology. The tech giant will unveil Mont Flex at a Korean display exhibition this week, and we have an early look at what the new branding signifies.
Each letter in the word MONT signifies different aspects of what Samsung believes to be its foldable display tech’s strengths. These include:
M for offering mechanical durability.
O for being opto-mechanically flat.
N for boasting narrow bezels.
T for being thin and lightweight.
Launching the designation now makes full sense. The tech giant’s latest, and potentially even the greatest, Galaxy Z Fold 7 is mechanically durable, having passed a 500,000-fold durability test. It’s opto-mechanically flat with a further muted crease, and features minimal bezels that maximize screen area. Lastly, and most importantly, it’s the thinnest and lightest Galaxy Z Fold ever, boasting an 8.9mm thickness when folded (down from 12.1mm) and an ultralight weight of just 215 grams, making it lighter than some traditional slab phones.
With Mont Flex , Samung not only intends to communicate the value of its foldable OLED screens to the consumers, it also intends to convey its leadership to industry partners and position itself as the primary display provider for next-gen foldables. Notably, according to reliable industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will use Samsung’s display tech for its first foldable iPhone, with the device reportedly coming out in the second half of 2026.
Samsung will fully unveil the new branding at the K-Display 2025 Korea Display Exhibition between August 7th and 9th.
