Samsung has been teasing a trifold phone for months. With its next Galaxy Unpacked event looming sometime in early 2026, we’re finally starting to see how the software might take advantage of all that extra screen real estate. New leaks reported by SammyGuru point to One UI 8 shipping with features tailored specifically for Samsung’s rumored trifold, including something power users will love: expanded versatility in three-way split-screen multitasking.
New ways to use a new Galaxy form factor
Innovation necessitates more versatile software
Here, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 stands next to its next major competitor, the trifold Huawei Mate XT.
Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold series, where running more than two apps side by side feels cramped, a trifold device’s three full-size panels actually make parallel multitasking viable. According to the leaked One UI 8 files, you’ll be able to launch a split trio setup, with three apps locked into a single layout. These trios can be saved to the home screen, pinned to the taskbar, or even dropped into the Edge panel for quick access.
Samsung will also let you arrange them horizontally or vertically, depending on your workflow. Think Slack, Chrome, and YouTube running in parallel, without feeling like you’re juggling tabs on a postage stamp.
That’s not the only software tweak Samsung is baking in. Cover screen mirroring, already a staple on the Galaxy Z Fold lineup, is getting reworked for the TriFold. Currently, the feature mirrors the cover display across two pages on the internal screen.
On the TriFold, it will stretch across all three panels with a slick new animation in settings. By default, your first two home pages will appear side by side on the larger inner display for a consistent layout, but Samsung isn’t locking you in. You can still set unique layouts per panel if you’d rather keep things separate.
Hardware-wise, we still don’t have the full picture. Rumors suggest Samsung is going with a G-shaped folding mechanism — where both sides fold inward — rather than Huawei’s outward-bending Mate XT design. That aligns with the device’s rumored branding as the Galaxy Z Trifold (or possibly Galaxy G Fold, depending on which leak you trust). Animations found in One UI 8 also show a pill-shaped triple-camera housing on the rear, similar to the Z Fold 6, along with both inner and outer selfie cameras.
Samsung executives have already confirmed the trifold is on track to launch before the end of the year, though it’s unlikely to get a full reveal at the July 9 Unpacked. Instead, expect more of a “preview” moment to set the stage for what comes next in foldables. Either way, One UI 8 is shaping up to be the biggest rethink of Samsung’s multitasking yet. And it might finally deliver on the promise of foldables as true productivity machines.
