Summary
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 won’t have full Qi2 support; only Qi 2.1.0 with ‘Qi2 Ready’ moniker.
- This means one must use a Qi2 Ready case to enjoy magnetic wireless charging.
- Wireless charging speeds should also remain unchanged at 15W.
Despite launching a year after the Qi2 standard was finalized, the Samsung Galaxy S25 lineup only shipped with a ‘Qi2 ready’ designation. This essentially meant the phone lacked built-in magnets for alignment with Qi2 chargers. But you could use a case with magnets to add magnetic wireless charging functionality to the phone. If you thought Samsung would make amends with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 and add full Qi2 support with MPP (Magnetic Power Profile), prepare for disappointment.
A new Samsung device passed through the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) with Qi 2.1.0 support. While the model number associated with the listing (SM-D637U) does not match Samsung’s typical naming convention, 9to5Google believes it is one of the company’s upcoming foldables — most likely the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Given the timing of the device passing through the WPC, that seems likely.
More importantly, the device only supports Qi 2.1.0, the same as the Galaxy S25. This means, like the Galaxy S25 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — and presumably the Z Flip 7 — will carry the ‘Qi2 Ready’ moniker and miss out on native magnetic wireless charging.
So, to enjoy MagSafe-like wireless charging and connectivity on Samsung’s upcoming foldable, you must buy a Qi2 Ready case separately. Samsung will most likely sell one officially, but be assured that there will be third-party options as well.
Don’t expect any other benefits from Qi2 support. Charging speeds still top out at 15W, which has been the limit for Samsung devices over the past few years.
Despite no major improvements, Samsung should still be able to claim the bragging rights as the first to launch a foldable with Qi2 support.
Why are Android makers not adopting Qi2 magnetic wireless charging?
Android manufacturers are typically at the forefront of adopting new hardware technology. However, they have been unusually slow in implementing full Qi2 support. Even now, there’s no major Android phone out there that offers native MagSafe-like magnetic wireless charging, including the OnePlus 13, Xiaomi 15 Ultra, and others.
Google is collaborating with the Wireless Power Consortium on the Qi 2.2 standard to add support for faster wireless charging speeds. But it’s unclear if the upcoming Pixel 10 lineup will adopt this new standard.
