Samsung’s Project Moohan headset is no secret, with the brand shedding light on the project nearly a year ago. Since that time, we haven’t really heard much about it, but we have seen plenty of rumors surrounding the product, which is set to reportedly get an official release sometime this year.
As the clock winds down, we’re getting new unofficial information about the headset, giving us our best look yet of what to expect. The news comes from Android Headlines, providing renders of the product, along with a ton of new information. Although headsets haven’t exactly been popular in the past, maybe this one could be different.
Samsung’s Galaxy XR is coming
Android Headlines dropped a bunch of renders for the upcoming headset, and for the most part the device looks pretty slick. We get a detailed look at all the components, from the sleek design, to the cushioned headpiece, and plush headband. Of course, this isn’t really our first look at this product, so being able to see the device from all angles isn’t really going to cause too much excitement at this point.
The publication also shows off some visuals for “One UI XR”, which looks like what you’d expect. It’s essentially what you find on Samsung’s current phones, the same visual look, with important apps from Google and Samsung. As far as the hardware, the device is expected to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, and will also feature 4K micro-OLED displays.
The word here is that the headset will push up to 29 million pixels, which would exceed what Apple’s Vision Pro offers. Naturally, there will be a variety of sensors that will track hand, eye, and head movement. The headset will also be able to understand voice and input from exterior devices.
You can power the device from an accompanying battery pack, which will magnetically attach to the headband. The big thing here is that the Samsung Galaxy XR headset is backed by Google. This will be one of the first devices running Android XR, Google’s new platform for XR devices.
While the build up has been slow, it’s understandable why all brands involved have been cautious. It’s been over a year since the Apple Vision Pro released, and we don’t really hear about it anymore. Samsung and Google don’t want to walk the same path. And if the past is any indication, it’s all going to come down to price and software support.
While the Vision Pro was exciting, it was just too expensive for most people and didn’t really offer anything compelling for the average consumer. Time will tell whether the Samsung Galaxy XR will be a success, but we wouldn’t count on it.
