Python | Pandas Series.truediv()

Pandas series is a One-dimensional ndarray with axis labels. The labels need not be unique but must be a hashable type. The object supports both integer- and label-based indexing and provides a host of methods for performing operations involving the index.

Pandas Series.truediv() function perform floating division of series and other, element-wise (binary operator truediv). It is equivalent to series / other, but with support to substitute a fill_value for missing data in one of the inputs.

Syntax: Series.truediv(other, level=None, fill_value=None, axis=0)

Parameter :
other : Series or scalar value
fill_value : Fill existing missing (NaN) values
level : Broadcast across a level, matching Index values on the passed MultiIndex level

Returns : result : Series

Example #1: Use Series.truediv() function to perform a floating point division of a given series object with other scalar.

# importing pandas as pd
import pandas as pd

# Creating the Series
sr = pd.Series([19.5, 16.8, 22.78, 20.124, 18.1002])

# Print the series
print(sr)

Output :

Now we will use Series.truediv() function to perform a floating point division of the given series object with other scalar.

# divide all elements of the series by 10
sr.truediv(other = 10)

Output :

As we can see in the output, the Series.truediv() function has successfully performed an element wise division of the given Series object.

Example #1: Use Series.truediv() function to perform a floating point division of a given series object with other scalar. The given Series object contains some missing values. Handle the missing values.

# importing pandas as pd
import pandas as pd

# Creating the Series
sr = pd.Series([19.5, 16.8, None, 22.78, 20.124, None, 18.1002])

# Print the series
print(sr)

Output :

Now we will use Series.truediv() function to perform a floating point division of the given series object with other scalar. fill the missing values by 100.

# divide all elements of the series by 10
# Also fill all the missing places by 100
sr.truediv(other = 10, fill_value = 100)

Output :

As we can see in the output, the Series.truediv() function has successfully performed an element wise division of the given Series object. It has also substituted 100 at the place of missing values before performing the division.
