Python any() function

Python any() function returns True if any of the elements of a given iterable( List, Dictionary, Tuple, set, etc) are True else it returns False.

Example

Input: [True, False, False]
Output: True
 
Input: [False, False, False]
Output: False

Python any() Function Syntax

any() function in Python has the following syntax:

Syntax: any(iterable)

  • Iterable: It is an iterable object such as a dictionary, tuple, list, set, etc.                 

Returns: Returns True if any of the items is True.

Python any() Function Example

Python any() Function on Lists in Python. The below example returns True since at least one element in the list (3rd element) is True.

l = [False, False, True, False, False]
print(any(l))

Python any()  Function Lists

This example demonstrates the use of any() on Python Lists. If at least a single element in the list is True, the any() function will return ‘True’ else it will return ‘False’.

l = [4, 5, 1]
print(any(l))
 
# All elements of list are False
l = [0, 0, False]
print(any(l))
 
# Some elements of list are
# True while others are False
# l = [1, 0, 6, 7, False]

Working of any() Function with Tuples

In this example, we will see the use of any() function on Python Tuples. If at least a single element in the tuple is True, the any() function will return ‘True’ else it will return ‘False’ even if the tuple is empty.

# All elements of tuple are True
t = (2, 4, 6)
print(any(t))
 
# All elements of tuple are False
t = (0, False, False)
print(any(t))
 
# Some elements of tuple are True while
# others are False
t = (5, 0, 3, 1, False)
print(any(t))

print(any(t))


Output:

True
False
True
False

Working of any() Function with Sets

In this example, we will see the use of any() function on Python Sets. The any() function on sets acts similarly as it is for a list or a tuple. If at least a single element in a set evaluates to be ‘True’, it will return ‘True’.

# All elements of set are True
s = { 1, 1, 3}
print(any(s))
 
# All elements of set are False
s = { 0, 0, False}
print(any(s))
 
# Some elements of set are True while others are False
s = { 1, 2, 0, 8, False}
print(any(s))
 
# Empty set
s = {}
print(any(s))


Output:

True
False
True
False

Working of any() function with Dictionaries

In the case of a dictionary, if all the keys of the dictionary are false or the dictionary is empty, any() function in Python returns False. If at least one key is True, any() returns True.

d = {1: "Hello", 2: "Hi"}
print(any(d))
 
# All keys of dictionary are false
d = {0: "Hello", False: "Hi"}
print(any(d))
 
# Some keys of dictionary
# are true while others are false
d = {0: "Salut", 1: "Hello", 2: "Hi"}
print(any(d))
 
# Empty dictionary
d = {}
print(any(d))


Output:

True
False

Working of any() function with Strings

In this example, we will see how Python any() function works with Python String. The any() function returns True, if there is at least 1 character in the string.

# Non-Empty String
s = "Hi There!"
print(any(s))
 
# Non-Empty String
s = "000"
print(any(s))
 
# Empty string
s = ""
print(any(s))


Output:

True

Python any() Function with a Condition

In this example, the any() function in Python checks for any element satisfying a condition and returns True in case it finds any True value.

test_list = [4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 17]

Python any() Function with For Loop

In this example, we will implement any() function using Python functions and a for loop. The my_any() function returns True if any element of the iterable is True, else returns False.

def my_any(list_x):
    for item in list_x:
        if item:
            return True
    return False
 
x = [4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 17]
print(my_any(x))
