The first reviews for Lost Soul Aside, a new Sony-published PS5 console exclusive, have trickled out since its launch on August 29. Unfortunately, the scores on Metacritic and OpenCritic aren’t very good for this action game developed by a small team in China.
Although it’s not quite one of the worst-reviewed games of the year, it’s definitely toward the bottom of the list. It’s also being rated at or around the same aggregate scores as Concord, an undeniable PlayStation-published failure from 2024.
How poorly is Lost Soul Aside reviewing?
It’s currently the 17th worst-reviewed game of 2025
At the time of publishing, Lost Soul Aside is sitting at a Metascore of 62 on Metacritic and a Top Critic Average of 66 on OpenCritic. Those scores are aggregated from the reviews of game critics from several different websites, who have mostly written reviews that rate the game between a 4/10 and 7/10.
Lost Soul Aside’s reviews praise its fluid action combat but heavily criticize the game’s uninteresting story and general lack of polish, both of which aren’t typically complaints people have about PlayStation-published games. DualShockers’ review of Lost Soul Aside has some praise, but ultimately concludes that “it feels like UltiZero dismissed everything outside of combat and shipped the game by going all-in solely on its hack and slash action.”
As it stands, the Metascore for Lost Soul Aside is currently the same as Concord’s, while OpenCritic’s is just a few points higher.
Concord was a live service hero shooter meant to have seasons of post-launch support. It reviewed so poorly, and so few players actually bought and played it, that the game was taken offline by PlayStation Studios shortly after launch. Just over a month later, the studio behind the game was shut down, and the developers who worked on the game were laid off.
That’s not exactly the best company for Lost Soul Aside to be scored around, even if it is a very different single-player focused game. Developer UltiZero has already committed to improving the game, too.
It’s also worth noting that pre-release review codes seemingly weren’t distributed that far ahead of time for Lost Soul Aside, so its Metascore and Top Critic Average are aggregated from fewer review scores than the likes of Concord.
Those scores can increase or decrease as more come in. You can also play the game to form your own opinion; a free demo is available on PS5.
Regardless, there’s no denying that Lost Souls Aside is off to a rocky start. Ghost of Yotei has some work cut out for it to redeem 2025’s lineup of PlayStation exclusives.
