p0sixninja reveals plans for ‘openjailbreak’

A few days ago, Joshua Hill, better known as iOS hacker p0sixninja, sent out a cryptic message from his Twitter account saying that he has a lot of amazing things coming soon. He didn’t say what it was, but he advised to ‘think bigger than a jailbreak.’

Today, though, Hill elaborated on his project with the following message: “Ok, I hate redsn0w, I hate sn0wbreeze, and I hate 6.1.3. I’m ready to get this #openjailbreak off the ground.” What is ‘openjailbreak,’ you ask? We’ll tell you right after the fold…

According to iFans’ Joe Rossignol, who says he spoke with p0sixninja about the project, ‘openjailbreak’ will be an open source jailbreak repository managed by a team led by Hill. Surenix is said to be working on developing the website for the whole thing.

“Essentially it’s going to be a repository of open source jailbreak components that I created over the years,” claims Hill. “So much of my code has been hacked up and incorporated into other projects, it’s becoming very fragmented. There’s no central repository to maintain all this code, to allow other developers to submit patches or help layout a roadmap for what new features and abilities will be added in the future.”

Joe goes on to say that Hill told him “this is just a small part of an ultimate plan.” He doesn’t say what that means exactly, but there has been speculation that p0sixninja has a bootrom exploit—a low-level system exploit with far-reaching jailbreak capabilities.

Whatever he’s working on, it must be big. Hill has been talking about it for months now, saying back in March that he had discovered enough exploits for a new jailbreak. And it’s probably not a coincidence that Ryan Petrich tweeted this out earlier tonight.

After being extremely involved in the creation of jailbreaks like Greenpois0n and Absinthe, p0sixninja has been somewhat quiet on the jailbreak front in recent months. But there’s no question he’s a talented hacker, so we can’t wait to see what he has cooked up.
