While Nintendo’s confirmation that the Switch 2 had shipped 3.5 million units worldwide already suggested that the console is a massive success, we now also have more specific North American data to back it up. According to data from the market research company Circana, Nintendo Switch 2 is the fastest-selling video game console of all time in the United States.
Its June 2025 sales numbers significantly surpass the 1.1 million unit record set by the PS4 in November 2013. It’s now impossible to deny that the Switch 2 is off to a very strong start.
How well did Nintendo Switch 2 do in its launch month?
The latest console launch has set a new record
Circana data shared by Executive Director Mat Piscatella on Bluesky estimates that around 1.6 million Switch 2 consoles were sold in North America last month. That also obviously means it was June’s best-selling piece of gaming hardware and at the core of a very fruitful month for the video game industry. For example, the new console launch also resulted in $978 million in hardware spending last month, by far the most spent on gaming hardware ever in June.
Meanwhile $4.4 billion was spent on video games in June, with the Switch 2 helping bolster this figure with its launch lineup. Circana shares a list of the best-selling games each month, and four of the games featured in the top 20 have native Switch 2 ports, with several others having backward-compatible Switch 1 releases. Mario Kart World came in third on the list, which is quite an achievement given that neither digital sales nor console bundle sales were counted by Circana.
Data was also shared for the best-selling games on Nintendo platforms specifically. You can see the full top 10 list from Circana below:
- Mario Kart World
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Street Fighter 6
- Mario Kart 8
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster
- Minecraft
Heading into the Switch 2’s launch, there was some criticism surrounding the console and game pricing. When asked if Nintendo priced the console correctly, Piscatella offered an insightful answer. “Day 1 buyers are going to be the least price sensitive. They still would have bought if the Switch 2 launched at an even higher price,” he posted on Bluesky. “The real test will be in holiday, when more mass market/gift buyers will be considering a purchase.”
Looking forward, it’s up to games like Donkey Kong Bananza, Drag X Drive, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A to keep interest up and console sales steady for Nintendo.
