Summary
- First-gen Amazon Fire TV devices won’t support Netflix after June 3, 2025.
- While Netflix didn’t issue a reason, it could have to do with the modern codecs being used for streaming.
- If you’re affected, you’ll need to purchase a new Fire TV Stick in order to avoid losing access to Netflix.
There are plenty of great streaming services, but Netflix is one of the big ones, delivering some of the best exclusive content, which is why so many people subscribe to the service. Even its recent shift to accommodate those on a budget has proven fruitful, with its ad-based plan pulling in 94 million subscribers in total.
With that said, it looks like some folks will be losing access to the platform, as first-generation Amazon Fire TV devices will no longer be compatible with the service starting in June. The news was sent out to owners recently via email, and was picked up by publications like TechRadar — delivering the devastating news.
Get ready to upgrade if you want to continue watching Netflix
When it comes to the details, Netflix will no longer support Amazon’s Fire TV and Fire TV Stick from 2014, starting on June 3, 2025. This also applies to the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote as well, which was produced in 2016. Netflix did not share why this was happening, but there’s a pretty good chance that older products just don’t support newer video and audio codecs that are being introduced.
Netflix has been transitioning to using the AV1 codec for some years now, as it is more efficient than older codecs. While it might be a bit of a pain for those using these devices to have to move on from their current Fire TV Stick, at least it’s not going to cost all that much to replace them. Right now, Amazon is offering the base Fire TV for just $20, which also comes with a voice control remote.
Another option is to dump Netflix entirely and move to another streaming service. Again, this is something that’s going to take place starting on June 3, which is just around the corner, so you’ll need to be quick when making a decision. Of course, it’s important to check whether you have an older model Fire TV stick.
And to do this, you can head into the Settings menu of the device, navigate to the My Fire TV section, and click on About. If you have a first-generation Fire TV Stick, now’s going to be the time to upgrade.
