Motorola recently moved to second place in global sales in Q2 2025, capturing 28% of the smartphone market. It’s an impressive jump, as the company’s seen its share double since last year.

A quarterly sales report may not be significant for customers, but it indicates that Motorola’s strategy is working.

Motorola’s done an excellent job reviving its image over the last few years. Its devices are excellent, providing solid value and hardware at multiple price points.

Sales figures don’t lie, and if you haven’t considered a Motorola in a while, now is the time to explore if Moto isn’t the Android alternative you’ve been searching for.

Foldables people actually want to buy

Another excellent crop of Razrs

A key driver of Motorola’s sales was the Razr series. The Razr 2025 and Razr 60 lineup, as it’s labeled overseas, resonated with customers.

Samsung has improved with the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7, but Motorola has been producing excellent flip phones for several years.

The Motorola Razr 2025 excels in several key areas. It’s stylish, with a sleek design and fun colors. It’s fun to hold and use, not something you can say about most smartphones in 2025.

It’s also functional. Its Dimensity 7400 chipset does the job, especially paired with 8GB of RAM. I get a full day of use on a single charge from its 4,500mAh battery, and it has an easy-to-use external screen.

When OnePlus announced it was leaving T-Mobile carrier stores, I knew it was a mistake.

I can set up the outer display on the Razr 2025 in seconds, without the need for Good Lock or other customization tools to use my favorite apps on the cover screen. It’s also priced right. At $700, it’s hard to beat.

The Motorola Razr Ultra is an impressive step-up. It cost a fortune at launch, but it was easily the most powerful clamshell you could buy. It’s my device of choice, and I love its combination of style and substance.

Its Snapdragon 8 Elite screams, and it’s hard to beat 16GB of RAM in a foldable. I routinely get outstanding battery life, and its 4-inch cover screen is more than adequate to scratch any social media scroll itches I encounter during the day.

I’ve carried around the latest Galaxy Z Flip device in my pocket for years, and no one’s ever asked me about switching. When I started carrying the Motorola Razr, I got people curious about making the jump.

Midrange phones are important

No need to always pay $1,000

Camera array on the Motorola Edge 2025

I’ve reviewed numerous Motorola midrange phones over the last several years. I may disagree with the company’s software update policies, but it’s hard to argue with the hardware quality for the price.

The Motorola Edge 2025 brings a premium look and feel to a sub-$500 price point.

Its 6.7-inch display is gorgeous, and I get the same smooth performance from the Dimensity 7400 chipset as I do on the Motorola Razr 2025.

It features excellent cameras and an IP69 rating. Add in its outstanding battery life, and you have a midrange winner.

I have similarly positive things to say about the Moto G Stylus 2025.

I love that I can get impressive stylus functionality without paying $1,200 for the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Its Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chipset is smooth, thanks to Motorola pairing it with 8GB of RAM. It also includes a vibrant display, something you don’t always see on devices under $400.

Motorola’s midrange smartphones are a significant reason for the company’s recent success, and I’m glad to see the plan working.

Frequent sales and discounts

Don’t underestimate the power of carrier stores

When OnePlus announced it was leaving T-Mobile carrier stores, I knew it was a mistake. People tend to buy what’s in front of their faces, so to make a dent in the US market, you need to be in carrier stores.

Motorola has always maintained a presence, which has been helpful. Holding a Motorola Razr up against a Galaxy Z Flip device would convince people to switch, and never underestimate the power of monthly payments.

I understand enthusiasts want to pay for unlocked devices upfront, but if millions choose to add a few dollars to their monthly plan to purchase a better phone, it’s a viable option.

Thankfully, you don’t even need carrier discounts to save. Motorola is more aggressive than most in discounting its devices — a good thing given the company’s bizarre initial MSRPs.

From Amazon to Walmart, it’s never hard to find an enticing sale on the Motorola you’ve been eyeing. Price matters, and Motorola has done a better job providing value.

Global sales may change, but Moto needs to stay the course

When Samsung’s foldable numbers for 2025 come in, the global rankings may shift again. However, that doesn’t mean Motorola should shift course.

The company is doing enough to attract customers and offer a different experience — something desperately needed in 2025.

Motorola’s new Moto G Stylus looks to keep the great design from its predecessor and match it with some more modern specs. Whether that’s enough to shy buyers away from the best of Samsung and Google, however, remains to be seen.
