Amazon has introduced a pair of new models into its Colosoft range of e-readers, joining the Colorsoft Signature Edition launched in October 2024. The first new model is a non-Signature Edition version, called simply Kindle Colorsoft, and a special version for children called the Kindle Colorsoft Kids.
The Kindle Colorsoft drops the Signature Edition name and trims down the internal storage space from 32GB to 16GB. In its press release, Amazon notes the Colorsoft still has an adjustable warm light, a particular highlight, but doesn’t mention wireless charging, a feature on the Signature Edition. Android Police confirmed with Amazon that the new 16GB Colorsoft does not have wireless charging. Considering the Kindle Colorsoft’s long battery life, this may not worry many buyers, who will instead welcome the new lower price.
Specification changes mean the Colorsoft costs less than the Signature edition. It’s $250 or £240, and this price includes three months of free access to the Kindle Unlimited service. After this time, Kindle Unlimited costs $12 or £9.50 per month. The Colorsoft’s color screen made it a first for the Kindle range, adding an extra dimension to books with photos, comics, and even your library pages, brightening up the reading experience over the usual greyscale screens on a Kindle.
Kids haven’t been left out
It’s joined by the Kindle Colorsoft Kids, which comes with a wide array of age-appropriate features, plus a year of Amazon Kids+ included in the price. A Vocabulary Builder and Word Wise feature help make reading educational, plus there’s the OpenDyslexic font for accessibility, and a two-year warranty for peace of mind. The Amazon Parent Dashboard connects with the device to manage content and set a bedtime.
The Colorsoft Kids has the same color screen as the normal Colorsoft, and comes with the choice of two different covers — Fantasy River and Starlight Reading — to personalize the e-reader. The Kindle Colorsoft Kids costs $270 or £260 complete with the special cover and a year of Amazon Kids+ access, which will cost $6 or £5 per month the year after.
Both new Colorsoft models are available to buy from Amazon now. The original Colorsoft Signature Edition had a rocky initial launch period, with some owners complaining of a yellow bar on the screen, forcing Amazon to pause shipments and fix the problem. It will be working hard to ensure the Colorsoft and Colorsoft Kids’ launch is far smoother.
