After weeks and months of leaks and rumors, Samsung finally took the wraps off its next-generation foldable devices at Galaxy Unpacked in New York. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 brings much-needed improvements, including a wider cover display and thinner design, but Samsung has also given the Galaxy Z Flip 7 some essential upgrades, including an edge-to-edge larger cover screen and a bigger battery.

One of the biggest questions ahead of the launch was which processor Samsung would use in the Galaxy Z Flip 7. Until now, Samsung has exclusively used the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets for its foldables. However, there were rumors that the Galaxy Flip 7 might feature Samsung’s own Exynos processor — and that has now been confirmed.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is the first to ditch Snapdragon in the US

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is the first flagship Samsung foldable to ship without a Snapdragon processor. Instead, Samsung has equipped the device with its in-house Exynos 2500 chipset. The more affordable Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE also skips Snapdragon in favor of the Exynos 2400, the same chip used in the Galaxy S24 in select regions like Asia and Europe.

Samsung hasn’t shared specific reasons for the switch, but it claims that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 offers a more powerful CPU, GPU, and NPU compared to the Flip 6. For those interested in specs, the Exynos 2500 is built on a 3nm process and features a deca-core setup: one Cortex-X5 core at 3.3GHz, two Cortex-A725 at 2.74GHz, five Cortex-A725 at 2.36GHz, and two Cortex-A520 cores at 1.8GHz.

While these changes look promising on paper, Samsung’s Exynos chips have historically lagged behind Snapdragon in efficiency and thermal performance. We’ll be putting the Galaxy Z Flip 7 through its paces soon to see how it stacks up in real-world usage, so stay tuned for that.
