Joseph Carson has spent more than three decades on the frontlines of cybersecurity—but today, his mission is laser-focused on what he sees as the biggest risk and opportunity in the digital age: identity. As Chief Security Evangelist and Advisory CISO at Segura, Carson brings a global perspective and deep technical expertise to one of the fastest-evolving areas of cybersecurity. In a time when human, machine, and cloud identities are under constant threat, Segura is redefining how organizations manage and protect access at scale. In this interview with SafetyDetectives, Carson explains how Segura’s unified Identity Security Platform is helping businesses stay agile, compliant, and secure—and why identity is no longer just a security issue, but the backbone of operational resilience.

Can you introduce yourself and talk about your role at Segura?

Absolutely. I’m Joseph Carson, Chief Security Evangelist and Advisory CISO at Segura. I’ve spent more than 30 years in cybersecurity, working across industries and continents, and I’ve seen how the security landscape has fundamentally changed. Today, identity has become both the greatest enabler and the greatest vulnerability for organizations everywhere.

At Segura, my role combines research, education, and global advocacy, all focused on solving one of the most critical and often overlooked areas of security: Identity Security. In a world of hybrid work, AI-driven automation, and expanding cloud environments, the way we manage and protect identities human, machine, and cloud must evolve.

Identity is no longer just about usernames and passwords. It’s access, authentication, privilege, and ultimately, the foundation of trust. Segura is reshaping how organizations secure that foundation by unifying identity management and privileged access into a simple, intelligent platform.

My job is to take this vision beyond the technical details to help security leaders, business executives, and IT teams understand how identity security directly impacts resilience, growth, and operational safety. Through global conferences, community engagement, and practical education, I help organizations translate complex identity challenges into clear, actionable solutions.

Because in today’s threat environment, identity security isn’t just an IT issue, it’s a business resilience imperative.

What does Segura do, and where does your identity security platform fit into today’s threat landscape?

Segura delivers a modern, unified Identity Security Platform that helps organizations protect what has become the new perimeter: identity. We provide simple, fast, and highly effective security for human, machine, and cloud identities without the complexity that slows businesses down.

Today’s attackers know that targeting identities whether it’s employees, service accounts, APIs, or cloud services is the fastest way to breach an organization. Yet traditional identity tools are often fragmented, difficult to deploy, and unable to keep pace with evolving threats.

Segura takes a different approach. We unify Privileged Access Management (PAM), Identity Threat Detection & Response (ITDR), and Identity Intelligence into a single platform. That means real-time protection, centralized visibility, and automated controls that reduce risk without adding operational friction.

The result? Organizations stay agile, compliant, and secure with 98% of Segura users trusting us to protect their environments efficiently and effectively.

In short, identity is the new perimeter and Segura is how you defend it.

How does Segura help companies manage both human and machine identities at scale?

Segura helps companies manage both human and machine identities at scale by simplifying and unifying identity security and privileged access across the entire environment whether it’s people, applications, automated processes, or cloud workloads.

The reality is, most organizations today have more machine identities than human ones such as service accounts, bots,, agentic AI, APIs, containers and each one represents potential access, and potential risk. Traditional identity tools often treat these separately, creating complexity and gaps resulting in a lack of identity visibility and intelligence. Segura takes a different approach bringing clarity and identity intelligence to secure and protect access.

Our identity security platform brings all identities human and machine under one roof. It provides centralized visibility, automated access controls, and real-time protection, so businesses can scale securely without introducing bottlenecks or blind spots. Whether you’re onboarding a new employee, spinning up cloud resources, or managing thousands of service accounts, Segura keeps identities and privileged access secure, simple, and consistent.

A great example of this in action was our recent participation in NATO’s Locked Shields, the world’s largest and most complex live-fire cyber defense exercise. The environment simulated critical national infrastructure under attack, with a highly distributed, hybrid setup involving thousands of assets. In that high-pressure, real-world scenario, Segura helped protect access to critical systems by securing over 1,000 human and machine credentials, ensuring privileged access remained controlled and resilient throughout the exercise.

Experiences like NATO Locked Shields demonstrate how our platform scales to meet the identity security challenges organizations face even in the most demanding environments. That level of scalability, simplicity, and proven resilience is why over 1,000 global clients trust Segura to help them protect identities and, ultimately, their business.

That’s how we help organizations protect what matters most, their identities and access even as they grow and their environments become more complex. Identity is the new  perimeter and Segura is the modern security that businesses need and want. Whether it’s onboarding an employee, deploying cloud resources, or securing thousands of service accounts, Segura keeps identity security simple, scalable, and resilient.

What role does Identity Threat Detection and Response (ITDR) play in your platform?

Identity Threat Detection and Response, or ITDR, is a critical part of how Segura helps organizations stay ahead of today’s identity-based threats. Managing access is only one piece of the puzzle where detecting and responding to identity misuse in real time is just as important.

Segura integrates ITDR directly into our platform combining Identity Intelligence with our Threat Radar and Identity Security controls to reduce risks, providing unified visibility and automated threat response across human, machine, and cloud identities. Our approach goes beyond traditional Privileged Access Management by actively monitoring for suspicious behavior, privilege abuse, and potential identity compromise.

This proactive defense is part of our broader vision to deliver a converged identity security platform, integrating PAM, ITDR, and CIEM into one, unified solution. It ensures organizations can not only manage access but actively defend their identities all without adding complexity or slowing down operations.

How do you secure third-party access without adding friction for users or IT teams?

Third-party access is essential for modern business but it’s also one of the fastest-growing security risks. Segura helps organizations enable secure, efficient third-party access without burdening IT teams or frustrating users.

Our platform makes it simple to grant time-limited, least-privilege, and fully monitored access to external partners, vendors, or contractors. Access is controlled through automated workflows, real-time visibility, and easy-to-use policies ensuring third parties get the precise access they need, when they need it, and nothing more.

Importantly, this is done without the manual processes, complexity, or delays often associated with securing third-party access. Segura’s customer-centric design delivers the market’s fastest time-to-value and lowest total cost of ownership all while maintaining enterprise-grade security.

In today’s environment, secure third-party access shouldn’t be a trade-off between security and speed and with Segura, it isn’t.

How do you help clients align identity management with compliance and audit requirements?

Compliance and audit readiness are built into the foundation of Segura’s identity security platform. We help organizations meet regulatory requirements by providing unified, real-time visibility and control over all identities for humans and machines across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Our platform automates access controls, enforces least privilege policies, and generates detailed, audit-ready reports with just a few clicks. That means faster, more accurate compliance processes without the manual effort or complexity.

Segura’s focus on full-stack efficiency, combined with integrated PAM and IAM capabilities, helps clients stay ahead of evolving compliance standards whether it’s ISO 27001, NIS2, GDPR, or industry-specific requirements. And with our global footprint, including Centers of Excellence in Brazil, the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and Poland, we understand the regional compliance challenges that organizations face.

Ultimately, we help our clients stay secure, compliant, and audit-ready all without slowing down their business.

To summarize, In today’s fast-moving, identity-driven threat landscape, security needs to be simple, unified, and built for scale. That’s exactly what we deliver at Segura.

By combining Privileged Access Management, Identity Threat Detection & Response, and Identity Intelligence into one identity intelligent platform, Segura helps organizations stay in control, reduce risk, and protect the most critical element of modern security identity.

Our mission is clear: simplify identity security, empower organizations to operate safely, and make resilience a business advantage.

Because in a world where identity is the new perimeter, Segura is how you defend it efficiently, effectively, and without compromise.
