In a recent interview with SafetyDetectives, Dr. Eliza Du, CEO and Founder of Integem, discusses her journey from academia to the startup ecosystem, culminating in the establishment of Integem. With a background in engineering, AI, and computer vision, Dr. Du’s vision was to revolutionize communication through holographic AI, transcending traditional graphical interfaces. She highlights the accessibility and safety of Integem’s holographic AR technology, emphasizing its potential impact on education and beyond. Dr. Du also explores the transformative role of holographic AI in fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and immersive experiences across various industries, from education to advertising and beyond.

Can you talk about your background and what led you to establish Integem?

Hello! I’m Dr. Eliza Du. With a rich background in engineering, specifically in AI and computer vision, my journey began in academia. I spent some time as an Assistant Research Professor at the US Naval Academy and then as a tenured professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue. My transition from academia to the industry was marked by my time at Qualcomm, where I was introduced to the dynamism of the startup ecosystem. It was in Silicon Valley where I truly grasped how startups could wield technology to make significant impacts. Motivated by this insight and along with a group of friends, we founded Integem. Our mission was simple yet ambitious: to revolutionize the way people communicate their visions and ideas. We wanted to transcend the limitations of traditional graphic user interfaces by leveraging Holographic AI, which aligns more naturally with human interaction, including gestures and expressions, offering a more intuitive and immersive way of communicating.

Who are your target users?

At Integem, we cater to a diverse audience, but our technology resonates strongly with two particular groups: the youth, who are always eager to explore and express themselves through new mediums, and seniors, who find our technology both fascinating and engaging. While our offerings have universal appeal, we initially decided to focus on the younger generation. Education is paramount for them, and we see our technology as a transformative tool in educational settings, providing an engaging and interactive learning experience.

How does holographic AR technology differ from traditional AR or VR solutions?

Our holographic AR technology stands apart by eliminating the need for cumbersome equipment like heavy VR goggles, which aren’t child-friendly, or the constant need to peer through a smartphone screen for AR experiences. Integem’s solution is built around a natural interface powered by a simple webcam, making it more accessible and safer for young users. This approach allows for a seamless and immersive experience without the barriers that traditional AR and VR technologies present.

What role does holographic AR play in fostering relevant skills or creativity and problem-solving in education?

Holographic AR by Integem is a powerful educational tool, serving two primary roles. Firstly, it acts as an interactive platform, akin to PowerPoint but far more engaging. Imagine students exploring Mars, not just through pictures but by virtually stepping onto the planet themselves. This level of interaction sparks natural curiosity and enthusiasm, making the learning process enjoyable and effective. Secondly, the technology serves as a creative and technical playground. Students can design virtual worlds, incorporating elements of art, design, and programming. This hands-on experience with coding, game design, and AI not only enhances their understanding of various subjects but also fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a fun and integrated learning environment.

How do you foresee holographic AI revolutionizing different industries?

The potential for holographic AI to transform industries is vast. In education, our primary focus, it offers a new dimension to learning and engagement. In advertising, it can create more immersive and intuitive experiences for consumers. The industrial sector stands to gain significantly as well, with digital twin technology allowing for cost-effective and risk-free experimentation in design and production. Politically, it can offer leaders a unique perspective on societal issues, enabling them to experience situations virtually, thereby fostering empathy and understanding. Overall, holographic AI is set to redefine communication, offering new ways to explore and interact with both our immediate surroundings and the world beyond.
