Install Opera Web Browser on Ubuntu 22.04|20.04

Step 1: Add Opera APT repository to Ubuntu

An APT repository with the latest releases of Opera Web browser is provided for Debian based systems. Before adding the repository, let’s import repository GPG key:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install wget curl
wget -qO- https://deb.opera.com/archive.key | sudo apt-key add -

curl https://deb.opera.com/archive.key | gpg --dearmor > opera.gpg
sudo install -o root -g root -m 644 opera.gpg /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/

GPG key will be added inside the /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/ directory:

$ ls /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/
opera.gpg  ubuntu-keyring-2012-cdimage.gpg  ubuntu-keyring-2018-archive.gpg

Install software-properties-common package which provides add-apt-repository used to add Opera repositories to our Ubuntu Linux.

sudo apt install lsb-release ca-certificates apt-transport-https software-properties-common -y

Use add-apt-repository command to add Opera repository:

sudo add-apt-repository "deb [arch=i386,amd64] https://deb.opera.com/opera-stable/ stable non-free"

Step 2: Install Opera Web Browser on Ubuntu 22.04|20.04

Once the repository is added confirm it is working by doing downloading package information from all configured sources

$ sudo apt update

Now install Opera web browser on Ubuntu 22.04|20.04:

sudo apt install opera-stable

Review dependencies and continue with the installation by pressing y or yes in your keyboard

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libcamel-1.2-62 libdpkg-perl libextutils-pkgconfig-perl libfile-fcntllock-perl libgupnp-1.2-0 pkg-config
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following additional packages will be installed:
  chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra
Recommended packages:
  pepperflashplugin-nonfree
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra opera-stable
0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 to remove and 45 not upgraded.

Also agree to the question “Do you want to update Opera together with the rest of the system?”

Installed package details including the version number can be checked with the apt command:

$ apt policy opera-stable
opera-stable:
  Installed: 81.0.4196.37

  Version table:

        500 https://deb.opera.com/opera-stable stable/non-free amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Step 3:Use Opera Web Browser on Ubuntu 22.04/20.04

Installed Opera browser can be launched from the terminal

$ opera

Or from Desktop Environment Applications search section.
