Short on time? Here’s how to unban users on Twitch in 2025:
- A single user: Use the “/unban [username]” command. Type “unban” in the chat and enter the username to unban that user.
- Multiple users: Find Banned Chatters in the Creator dashboard. Go to Settings > Moderation and unban users from there.
There are a couple of ways to unban someone on Twitch, and they’re all pretty straightforward. In this article, I explain all the ways (and steps) you can reverse the ban you’ve enforced on someone on your Twitch channel — and briefly explain what happens after a user is unbanned.
I’ll also cover how to troubleshoot if the unbanning process isn’t working, and how to remove a temporary timeout on a user.
Note: if you’re looking to get unbanned on Twitch, you’ll need to create a new account with a VPN to hide your IP address. My favorite VPN is ExpressVPN as it has a large server network and regularly updates its IP addresses. Note that using a VPN with Twitch may violate its Terms of Use. At SafetyDetectives, we recommend following all rules and regulations.
Editors’ Note: ExpressVPN and this site are in the same ownership group.
How to Unban Someone on Twitch in 2025
Twitch gives you several options when it comes to unbanning a user, and the best choice depends on whether you’re interested in unbanning one or more users and if you know the exact username of the person you want to unban.
Option 1: Chat Command
Should you only want to unban a user or two and you know their exact usernames, the easiest route to take is chat commands. Here’s how to unban someone from your channel’s chat:
- Go to your Channel. Click on your profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen and select Channel.
- Open your chat. Once there, select Chat from the bottom menu.
- Use the chat command. Type in the following command in the chat: “/unban.” Then press Enter and type in the username of the user you want to unban. Press Enter to confirm, and you’re done!
Pro Tip: Make sure you’re not keeping the brackets [ ] when typing in the username.
- Confirm the unban. If the user’s been unbanned from your channel, you’ll see a message confirming that in the chat.
Does the user get notified after they’re unbanned on Twitch?
No, Twitch does not send an official notification to a user when they are unbanned. They won’t receive any emails or alerts from the platform. The user can figure it out if they try chatting again. Alternatively, they might use third-party tools or bots to track their ban status. That said, to ensure they know they are unbanned, it’s best to notify them directly.
Option 2: Creator Dashboard
If you don’t know the user’s exact username or you want to unban several people at once, you can remove bans through the Creator Dashboard — the alternative is typing username by username, but this is very inconvenient.
To unban someone through the Creator Dashboard, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the Creator Dashboard. Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner and select Creator Dashboard from the dropdown menu.
- Go to Moderation settings. In the left-hand menu, click on Settings and then Moderation.
- Open Banned Chatters. Here, you’ll find the full list of all banned users.
- Find the user you want to unban. Scroll through the list of banned users to find the one you’re looking for. If you know part of their username, you can use the search bar, which will bring up the full username. Then, click on the trash icon to unban them.
Option 3: Mod View
Twitch’s Mod View offers a more detailed interface for handling unbans. Here, you can unban a user from Mod Actions. This is convenient if you’ve recently banned the user since this tab keeps track of all actions you’ve taken related to your channel.
To do that:
- Open your chat window. You can get there by following steps 1 and 2 here. From the chat window, click on the sword icon to enter Mod View.
- Go to Mod Actions. It’s in the lower-left corner of your Mod View, where you’ll find different actions you’ve taken, like bans, unbans, deleted messages, etc.
- Find the banned user and unban them. If the ban is recent, you probably won’t have to scroll down too much. Once you click on their username, a window will pop up on the right with the option to unban them.
Unbanning a user through unban requests
If a user has sent you a request to unban them, you can approve that request from Mod View. Here’s how to do it:
- Locate your Unban Requests. This tab is on the left-hand side menu in Mod View.
- Find the user(s) you want to unban and select Accept to unban the user(s).
How To Remove a Temporary Ban on Twitch
If you’ve only timed out a user (and haven’t banned them from the channel) and wish to lift the restriction, you can use the “/timeout” command:
- Access your chat. Open your Twitch channel’s chat window. Follow steps 1 and 2 here to find it when you first open Twitch.
- Enter the Untimeout command. Type the following command in the chat: “/untimeout” and add the username. Then, press Enter. Remember not to use the brackets [ ] when typing the actual username!
- Confirm you’ve lifted the timeout. You’ll see a message in the chat confirming your action.
What Happens After You Unban Someone on Twitch?
Unbanned users can immediately participate in chat. However, some limitations might still apply to them, depending on your stream’s settings:
- Slow mode. If slow mode is active, the unbanned user will be restricted just like everyone else. They’ll have to wait a specified amount of time before sending messages.
- Follower/sub-only chat. If your channel is in follower-only or subscriber-only mode, the unbanned user will only be able to chat if they haven’t rage-quit after their ban and are still subscribed to or following your channel.
- AutoMod, blocked words & expressions. While unbanning lifts the ban, it doesn’t override your stream’s broader chat rules. For example, if you have set up AutoMod to filter certain phrases in the chat or stop spam, the messages will still get filtered through those, and a potential ban is imminent if they break the chat rules.
Troubleshooting Unbanning Issues on Twitch
Sometimes, even after you’ve unbanned a user on Twitch, they may still have issues participating in your channel. Whether the user still can’t chat or your mod tools aren’t responding, here’s how to troubleshoot the most common unbanning problems on Twitch.
User Is Still Banned After Unbanning
If a user is still unable to chat after you’ve unbanned them, there could be several underlying causes:
IP bans
Twitch sometimes applies bans at an Internet Protocol (IP) level, especially in cases of harassment or ban evasion. An IP address is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a network, allowing for identification and communication between devices. As such, even if you unban the username, their IP address may still be flagged by Twitch’s system.
To fix this, the user can try logging in from a different network (e.g., mobile data or using a VPN) to test. If they can access the chat like this after unbanning, they most likely have an IP ban from Twitch. You’ll probably need to contact Twitch Support to resolve the issue.
Twitch glitches or sync delay
Occasionally, Twitch may have a delay in updating the ban status, especially if Mod View or the chat window hasn’t been refreshed. To solve this issue, try logging out of and back into your account, refreshing your Mod View, closing and reopening the user card, or even re-entering the unban command. The user should also log out of their account and back in.
Chat restrictions still in place
Even if they’re unbanned, the user might still be affected by the chat restrictions I’ve mentioned before, such as follower or sub-only mode, and they may still get automatically banned due to specific chat rules in your channel.
Mod Commands Aren’t Working
If your /unban command or mod tools aren’t working properly, here’s what to check:
Mod permissions
Unless it’s your own Twitch channel, you may not have sufficient mod permissions, especially if you’re a VIP or limited-role mod. Only full moderators and the channel owner can execute all commands.
Bot conflicts or AutoMod settings
Some larger channels may run chatbots such as “Nightbot” or “StreamElements” that have their own layered moderation systems, similar to the AutoMod feature on Twitch. These might automatically re-ban users based on filters such as inappropriate content.
Check the AutoMod or bot settings — you might need to whitelist specific users or tweak the AutoMod rules.
Mod View bugs
Mod View occasionally has temporary bugs or UI glitches, especially after a Twitch update. To fix this issue, simply refresh or restart Mod View, use it on a different device, or try unbanning the user through chat commands, instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I see my ban list on Twitch?
To see your ban list, you need to go to your Creator Dashboard. To do that, click your profile picture in the top-right corner of Twitch and select the Creator Dashboard. From here, select the Settings tab in the left-hand panel of your dashboard, and then click on Moderation. Scroll down to Suspicious Users Controls and finally select Banned Chatters to see who is currently on your channel’s ban list.
What is the command to unban someone on Twitch?
The standard chat command to unban a user on Twitch is /unban username, with username being replaced by the person’s Twitch name. You can also use the /untimeout command to end a timeout imposed on the user, or /unblock if the user has been blocked. Some methods involve using the Mod View, if you prefer unbanning chatters from there.
How long does a ban last on Twitch?
Unless specified as a timeout, any ban on Twitch is permanent until revoked by the channel’s owner or one of the other moderators. You can check out how to unban a user quickly here. As for the timeouts, they can be set to anything from a couple of seconds to a day or a week or longer. A moderator will usually let the user know how long they’ll be unable to chat, and the action can be reversed by channel owners or moderators through the /untimeout command.
Can you tell if someone blocked you on Twitch?
No, as Twitch doesn’t provide a direct notification or alert when someone blocks or bans you. However, there are subtle signs that may suggest it, such as being unable to send whispers to a person or follow them, or even send a friend request. If you were previously following them and you suddenly aren’t, it could be another indication.
When to reject a Twitch unban request?
You should consider rejecting an unban request if the user hasn’t taken responsibility for their actions, shows no remorse, or continues to be disruptive in the appeal process itself. Requests filled with sarcasm, trolling, or vague non-apologies are clear red flags.
Additionally, repeat offenders, ban evaders, or users who violated zero-tolerance rules (like hate speech or harassment) shouldn’t deserve another chance. Your unban policy should prioritize the safety and comfort of your community above all.
