The first trailer for OD has been released by Kojima Productions. It’s extremely frightening and reminiscent of the Silent Hill game that Hideo Kojima was working on before he was fired from Konami.
This trailer was revealed as part of the Beyond the Strand livestream hosted by Kojima Productions. Other reveals from the show included the announcement of an AR game Hideo Kojima is making with the developers of Pokémon Go and additional details about the studio’s Metal Gear Solid spiritual successor, Physint.
What was revealed at Kojima Productions’ Beyond the Strand showcase?
OD headlined a compelling lineup of upcoming games
OD was first teased by Hideo Kojima at The Game Awards 2023 and is being published by Xbox Game Studios. During the Beyond the Stream showcase, we got our first true look at gameplay.
While it’s all still quite cryptic, the trailer follows a character modeled after actress Sophia Lillis from a first-person POV as she lights several candles while something is ominously knocking at her door. Eventually, it is able to break in and attack Lillis’ character. That’s why it’s called the “Knock” teaser trailer.
For not revealing too much, the trailer is very frightening and built around the dread of hearing aggressive knocking at your door. The first-person perspective and cryptic nature of it all also harkens back to P.T., Kojima’s cryptic 2014 playable teaser for a Silent Hill game that was ultimately canceled after Konami let Hideo Kojima go.
Things have worked out well for Hideo Kojima since then. Much of the Beyond the Strand livestream was spent reflecting on the studio’s past, and how it wants to continue to expand and IP in the future. OD is key to that, but so were some other reveals.
A teaser trailer was released for a Death Stranding animated project, and A24 reminded us that a movie set in the Death Stranding universe is moving forward in production. The first poster for Kojima Productions’ stealth-action game Physint was released, and we got confirmation that actors like Don Lee, Charlee Fraser, and Minami Hamabe will be in the game.
Finally, it was announced that Kojima Productions and Niantic Spatial are working on a new AR game together. Niantic is best known for creating games like Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now. While Scopely is now in control of those projects, Niantic Spatial is operating independently and working on projects like this one.
Niantic’s games are all about interacting with the world in surprising ways, so it’ll be intriguing to see what an unpredictable creative mind like Hideo Kojima’s can do with such a game. Whether you’re looking forward to that mobile game, Physint, the Death Stranding adaptations, or OD, it’s clear that Kojima Productions will be sticking around and making a lot of zeitgeist-worthy games over the next decade.
