  • Google says a recent Instagram update fixes a battery drain issue on Android devices.
  • Users should update to Instagram version 382.0.0.49.84 to avoid unnecessary battery loss.
  • Keeping apps updated is important as new versions often include fixes and performance boosts.

Despite having large battery capacity smartphones, like the Google Pixel 9a and OnePlus 13, battery drain still remains a major concern for many Android users. If you’ve recently noticed increased battery drain on your Android phone, though, it turns out it may not be your phone’s fault — it seems Instagram was behind the issue.

Google has published a post on the Android Help Community advising users to update the Instagram app. The post states that “Instagram is rolling out an updated app that should fix a battery drain issue on Android devices” and recommends updating to version 382.0.0.49.84 to resolve the problem.

We’re seeing the version available on all of our Android devices, including phones from Google, Samsung, and OnePlus, suggesting this is an accelerated rollout from Google as well.

Google hasn’t shared whether a specific manufacturer (like Samsung or OnePlus) or Android version was more affected by the bug, so the issue might have been fairly widespread. Regardless, it’s good news that Instagram has already addressed the bug and is pushing the update to all Android devices.

On a personal note, I haven’t noticed any major battery issues on my current daily drivers, including the Realme GT7 and the Google Pixel 9 Pro, but it’s clear the problem was big enough for Google to address it publicly.

As a general rule, it’s always a good idea to keep your apps updated. Developers routinely release performance improvements and bug fixes, and with Instagram being one of the most downloaded apps on Android, staying updated is definitely wise.
