Remember the Google Pixel Tablet? It might be hard to believe, but that device came out in 2023, and we pretty much never talk about it anymore. Of course, it wasn’t really hardware worth remembering, and Google only started hitting its hardware hot streak the following year with the Pixel 9, and continuing that trend with the Pixel 10.
The Pixel Tablet is a different story though, and it never really got off the ground for a number of reasons. As you can imagine, something that isn’t all that successful with consumers isn’t really going to get a second chance, which is why we haven’t seen a successor.
Google does something unexpected
And while most people will think that it’s pretty much dead in the water, it looks like Google is at least extending a small olive branch to those that purchased the device. 9to5Google spotted a small update to the Pixel Tablet support page that extends major software updates by two years.
In total, Google will provide five years of updates, which means the Pixel Tablet will get guaranteed updates until June 2028. Previously, updates were scheduled to end in June 2026, which is just a few months from now. For the most part, this should be pretty exciting news for Pixel Tablet owners.
New software could be a game-changer
New software updates can be a real game-changer for Android devices. We’ve seen the evolution of Android over the past few years, and it’s taken some pretty big steps. And while it’s still early, there’s a pretty good chance that the upcoming Android 17 update could be a big one.
Naturally, the Pixel Tablet will be getting this update and any future updates going forward. And while it isn’t the most powerful device, the Google Tensor G2 should be more than enough to handle these updates. The good news is that you don’t have to do anything as a Pixel Tablet owner.
You can just sit back and grab the new updates as they come. If you’re someone that’s thinking about purchasing a new tablet, it’s probably a good idea to look for something else. While the Pixel Tablet was good, there are much better options out there now from rivals like Samsung and OnePlus.
